Hi Tom -- You need to make a reservation with the campground. You can do that online at http://www.midnrreservations.com/

I would also suggest calling the Rec Area headquarters to find out if they have any special instructions for parking, etc. and whether or not they plow the sites. Here's the phone number: 989-473-2258. Have fun!!

Sean Why are youth hunters that are hunting deer on an apprentice license not allowed to use crossbows? I have a soon to be 10 yr old that loves to go out and hunt with me (as I am sure there are plenty of others out there too), but there is no way he can pull back a bow with enough weight to cleanly take it out, so he has... to miss out on deer season for the next few years although legally he can hunt (starting next season)

In Michigan, the standard curriculum for hunter safety classes does not yet include crossbows, although many instructors may include it on their own, which is great! For more info about the crossbow regs, try this link: http://bit.ly/7fzg9B

Crossbows were a part of the first Hunter Education Academy I went to in 2002.I believe it was taught there before that but can not say for sure. I learned a great deal from that course. Also I will refer you to page 46 of Todays Hunter specificaly The part titled Know Your Cross Bow. Todays Hunter is the book EVERY Hunter Education Instructor is ... See Moreassigned in the current standard curriculum. Crossbows are and have been a part of Hunter education for many years. Myself and many other volunteers work very hard to produce safe and knowledgeable hunters.

DNA from both bighead and silver carp were found in the canal earlier this year, but only one bighead was found in the canal during the poisoning effort in December. You can learn more on the DNR's Asian Carp page: www.michigan.gov/asiancarp

Nick Godwin Why doesn't the DNR have a stateland user permit?
To park/enter and use any stateland ( not just parks) for ANY reason, ANY time of the year you should have to purchase a user permit. That would increase the DNR's revenue & maybe, just maybe, if the slobs had to pay to use the land they would respect it more.
Hunters and... fisherman are the reason we have "stateland" to begin with. Yet all the birdwatchers, shroomers, walkers, joggers and so on get free use of it.
Just a simple card you have to carry. Say $10 each per year.
If your caught on stateland without 1 you will have to pay say a couple hundred dollar fine AND spend a weekend cleaning up stateland parking lots or making improvements.

And picking up the trash people dump! I know you know the the land at the end of Washington Rd, I was back there bird hunting a bit ago and was amazed at the trash dumped back there. Lazy worthless people who can't go to the dump and would rather risk getting cought dumping on state land.

Just to let you know, there are other stakeholders in the state who have proposed a similar idea for a "conservation license." This may become a proposal the Natural Resources Commission is presented with in the future, so you should definitely share your thoughts with them. Here's the contact info: http://bit.ly/4xlKou

I can't believe it hasn't already happened. What a great way for the state to increase revenue & maybe, just maybe make stateland more user friendly.
Ya Mark, I know the place your talking about. You should see some of the parking lots down this way after gun season. What a shame. Disrespectful slobs!
Giving ALL of us stateland users a bad name.
I hope it becomes a proposal & passes SOON.

Chad -- Here are the hunter orange requirements, as stated on page 28 of the Hunting and Trapping Guide:

You may not hunt with any device, or trap with any firearm, on any lands during daylight hunting hours from Aug. 15-April 30 unless you wear a hat, cap, vest, jacket or rain gear of highly visible orange color, commonly referred to as Hunter Orange. When hunting in any season with a license that authorizes the use of a firearm, you must wear Hunter Orange except as noted below. During the November firearm deer season, this law applies to all deer hunters. The garment, featuring Hunter Orange, must be the outermost garment and must be visible from all sides. Camouflage orange garments, with 50 percent or more of the surface in Hunter Orange, are legal.

Exception: This law does not apply to persons hunting waterfowl, crow, wild turkey, or to persons engaged in the sport of falconry. It does not apply to archery or crossbow bear hunters or to persons who are stationary and in the act of hunting bobcat, coyote or fox. Archery and crossbow deer hunters also are not required to wear Hunter Orange except during the early antlerless, youth firearm, and the November firearm deer seasons.... See More

PS: It is believed that deer see in shades of gray. A block of solid color may be noticeable to them, but most likely only if you are moving.

Hi Ryan -- Bowfishing through the ice is allowed on some waters, but there are quite a few regulations as to which dates, which species and which lakes or rivers are included. I would suggest picking up a 2009 Fishing Guide at a license retailer or at your local DNR office. Otherwise, you can see the guide online here: http://bit.ly/7yqXBp
