Put simply: Mike Kinnebrew is good. Very good! As a music critic, I spend countless hours being bombarded by the stereotypical "guy the with a guitar, a song, and a dream of going pro." It's a little tiresome, to be honest. After attending his recent performance at the renowned Eddie's Attic in Atlanta, GA I can tell you, Mike is something altogether different.
Mike has that intangible talent that is hard, even for a writer, to articulate. On the marketability side, yes, he does have the "look" to make A&R executives stop and stare, but one gets the feeling that he couldn't care less about it. Suffice it to say that, when you're watching him, you know that you're seeing something special. He plays the guitar with effortless intention and sings with the conviction of a man twice his age. More importantly, his songs are pure poetic emotion. This young man knows how to strike the perfect balance between a great melody and an intensely meaningful lyric. If he ever tires of performing live, Mike should have no problem simply making a living as a songwriter - although I don't get the impression that he's thinking about that right now.
The renowned Eddie's Attic in Atlanta is among the places he regularly headlines, and a brief look at his musical resume shows that Mike has shared the stage with plenty of high profile artists such as Kristian Bush (Sugarland), Jaci Valesquez, Adam Levy (Norah Jones/Amos Lee), Oteil Burbridge (Allman Bros), and Matthew Perryman Jones - not to mention buddying around with a guy by the name of John Mayer.
Mike is definitely a guy with a guitar and a song, but he is unlike any that I've ever met. Even though he doesn't seem to be preoccupied with "going pro", if he keeps creating musical moments like this, he might not have a choice!
