Congressional Military Family Caucus
We recognize that when a service member joins the military, it is not just a job; it is a family commitment to our country. Our goal is to address issues such as education, childcare, healthcare, spouse employment, etc.

Karen Driscoll

Karen Driscoll From the AAP: Children with "autism spectrum disorder are significantly more likely to have problems regarding access to care and unmet needs, and their families have greater financial, employment, and time burdens compared with other children with special health care needs."
When TRICARE fails to cover effective trea...tments (like ABA therapy) at the appropriate amount, families are forced to forgoe prescribed treatment (placing a strain on an already stressed family) or pay thousands of dollars out of pocket each month. Not only is this a mental health issue (for the entire family) this is a readiness issue.

Karen Driscoll "Families whose children have special needs, such as those with autism or Down syndrome, pay the highest price. Military medicine offers some support for those families -- but not much. These families must rely on state-based Medicaid services, which vary widely in terms of services and eligibility standards."

Karen Driscoll This FOX piece aired last night in DC. Families ask for Congressional intervention to correct this policy deficit. As our military men and women serve this country with honor and integrity, we as a country have a moral obligation to take care of our military families here at home.

I applaud research efforts focused on the causal factors of autism, but we also have to treat the thousands of children currently afflicted with this devastating disability. Treatment WORKS! All major national medical policy organizations (AAP, NIH, NIMH, IOM) support early and intensive inverntion for the treatment of autism.....yet finding ... Ver maisfunding for prescribed treatments remains illusive to the military child. We need Congressional intervention to recognize the medical necessity of effective behavior intervention programs under TRICARE. Families ask for your help.

Jeremy My take is that this is across the disability spectrum and is probably related most to those with significant behavior issues as well as the severity of the child's condition

Jason Vitaliano

Jason Vitaliano I think it's important to recognize the level of stress that Special Needs families/parents are exposed to and learn better how to address their needs. This is one reason why I feel Respite Services or Skilled Nursing is essential to the well being of families like this. This has a significant mental health impact on us as service members and on our spouses.

Nicole Rosen There needs to be a way to report soldiers who have problems in personal life that may not show up in professional life

Kim Taylor Gunkel

Kim Taylor Gunkel I'm not sure where to post this so I will just put it on the wall. It would be great if the military was except from state waiting lists for Medicaid services. Some states have long waiting lists. You have to physically live in the state before you can get on the waiting list and sometimes you actually move away before... you ever get services. We as military families have no control over where we are sent and I think there should some type of waiver or exception for military families. I realize that some families will be more urgent but if anything, let the families get on the state waiting list once they get orders and not once they actually move into the state.
