I'm saddened to see that there are people that still don't believe that we are permanently affecting our environment through massive industrialization of the world. Many people forget that humans are a species, too. We are NOT immune to the damage we're causing on Earth. 99% of scientists agree that we are causing these problems, but depending on what news networks you watch or radio shows you listen to, you may erroneously believe otherwise. Thank you MBA for educating people on this.

They need to start building giant protein skimmers to remove organics from the water. Same principle as a reef tank, bubbles float organics into a removable collection cup before they brake down and cause toxins. That would be awesome!

The US fishing policies and protected areas like the Monterey Bay area great, but what's needed is some sort of body with international reach. But, as is noted above, policies are one thing, enforcement is quite another, and the oceans outside us territorial waters are obviously vast.
