I am very offended by the Jail Activity Book. Your insensitive attempts to profit from the tragedy of incarceration
in this country is appalling. 2.2 Million people sit behind bars today,
wasting taxpayer dollars and destroying peoples lives, a situation that
is far from cute or humorous. I am an outdoor enthusiast who ha...s used
your products in the past, and until you end this campaign and
apologize for your insensitive and juvenile characterization of a very
real tragedy, you will not receive my business.

I'm sorry to say that until the Jail Activity Book is
totally cleared from any Moosejaw advertising, I will not be shopping
there and neither will all the people I just email blasted. I have a
sense of humor and can appreciate controversy and comedy. What I cannot
appreciate is an ignorant mockery of the very real and horr...ific
problems upwards of 2,000,000 people face in prison (i.e. "don't get
shanked in the shower,") or perpetuation of demeaning stereotypes (i.e.
"prison arithmetic.")

As someone who has worked closely with the incarcerated community,
(many of whom could have tutored ME in math,) it pains me to think
about how many people (who are lucky enough not to know what it's
really like in there) are laughing at the ad and, by extension,
laughing at the people that I care about who are suffering.

Please remove the ad. Once you do, I look forward to funnier times and increased spending at Moosejaw.

Alex Gorosh There's plenty of non-offensive themes that Moosejaw could use for their ad campaigns. No reason to offend people in the process.

Currently, nearly
2,300,00 LIVES are being wasted in prisons and jails across the
country. This ad campaign shows that Moosejaw has no knowledge of
incarceration in this country, nor any sense of reality of the
customers it has just lost.

I have bought Christmas gifts at the Moosejaw in Ann Arbor every
year, however my busi...ness has been lost. I could never support a store
which harasses so many people through their advertisements.

Incarceration
is not fun, cute, or a vehicle in which to gain profit. I demand that
you discontinue this ad campaign immediately. I also suggest that your
marketing department do some research on prison and what it is like
beyond its portrayal in popular entertainment.

Stephen

Stephen it's a shame that some people expect the world to be PC all the time. companies/people define themselves by not conforming to the norm... when was the last time you did something out of the ordinary that turned some heads? what's next, people getting offended by all the beautiful models in their mags? :/

now that I'm off my soapbox, i love ya moosejaw & Lola!

sadly, jokes about prisoners are not at all out of the ordinary in pop culture. they are a frequent crutch of ignorant, talentless comedians, and they contribute to the permissiveness our society has toward the abuses that are routine in American prisons. Moosejaw IS conforming to the norm!

Jimmy McClellan jesus christ people... worse things are going on in the world. It's just an ad. Poor choice of subject matter? maybe, but come on... loosen up.

I would like to reiterate other commenters' displeasure with your recent ad campaign. I think it goes without saying at this point that many Moosejaw customers did not find this particular e-mail amusing, and with good reason. I have noticed that Moosejaw's e-mails have not only become more frequent lately, but have al...so explored more and more the boundaries of good taste. Not only is this ad a complete non sequitur as it has nothing to do with the products you sell, but it's also offensive to anyone who has ever been imprisoned or who knows anyone who has, never mind the fact that it makes light of some very serious aspects of our society. "The Madness" has become tiresome and immature.

I hope the fact that this e-mail backfired not only forces you to be more careful before hitting the send button but to also re-examine what constitutes humor and acceptable advertising for your company.

By the way, it is possible to advertise a product and to be ethical at the same time. Yes, it isn't ideal to end up in jail, I understand that. But "Don't get shanked in the shower" ? As a frequent (and former) customer of Moosejaw, I'm disappointed to realize that this company would deem it appropriate to poke fun ...at our country's incarceration tragedy. Moosejaw's previous advertisements were witty and entertaining, but this particular ad lacks any sort of sensitivity and understanding toward those who are suffering behind bars.Read More

Ya, I just checked out your ads and that stuff is dumb! Does your company really wanna associate itself with the way prisons are run in the US? I used to shop at your store in East Lansing, and now I live in Chicago. Luckily you have a number of competitors here. And that's where I'll get my stuff until I hear that ...this ad campaign is shut down. I guess that's the power of consumer choice. The balls in your corner. Oh, and I get that you wren't trying to be mean, just trying to "have fun" n' all that, but there's much better, smarter ways to do that while maintaining your companies ethics. Go back to food fights! I'm a fan of sustainability and not wasting food, but I'm not gonna get mad or stop shopping at a company that promotes food fights. No comparison, come on.Read More

Matthew Erickson http://bit.ly/2xXq1c Disappointing. Just another company that will do just about anything to get you to buy its stuff.

Alyssa Grace Sorresso

Alyssa Grace Sorresso Your recent advertising campaign is completely inappropriate. I think marketing can do better than stooping to prison jokes, and making light of the atrocious number of people incarcerated in our country. I would ask that you change your marketing strategy, and in the future, be more sensitive. Until then, you will not be receiving my business, and I will pass this along to my network.

"we would never try to capitalize on another human's suffering." by asking folks to come to your store to play Don't Get Shanked in the Shower, you ARE capitalizing, in the most literal sense of the word.

not to mention - and as one of your fans stated below - using an old, cliched bit of hack comedians everywhere

I and others have specifically asked that you end this campaign and apologize for its insensitivity, and that has not been addressed.

Please let us know when you will end using this offensive content.

As much as I usually am a supporter of the lighten up and find a way to laugh mantra. I too am offended by the poorly thought out adverstisement that I received in my inbox. As a high school teacher, I work everyday to teach sensativity and empathy to young people. I would venture a guess that most who visit Mooseja...w don't find "that's so gay" acceptable since it is offensive to so many people. While I try to get my students to stop saying that and other insensative things, Moosejaw-a company that I want to support-goes ahead and makes a wild and unwise statement that if seen by students like mine could encourage a whole new set of derogatory statements in my classroom.

I don't hate Moosejaw. I generally find the emails quite funny. I just hope that their ad supervisors take a bit more time to review think about the company's next campaign and send a message that all of its customers want to laugh at.
