These are probably the ten most helpful books I've read on the subject of writing fiction. I read each of them this year, except for #10, which I read about seven years ago: 1) "On Writing" by Stephen King. 2) "The First Five Pages" by Noah Lukeman...

Moses Siregar III I just finished writing the first draft of my novel. It's been an incredibly life-affirming process that started in August (the first glimpse of the idea came in January and was put aside until August). Experiencing it coming together has made me cry joyfully a number of times while writing it--the emotion just comes up from my soul.

Moses Siregar III Alan Watts: "Advice? I don't have advice. Stop aspiring and start writing. If you're writing, you're a writer. Write like you're a goddamn death row inmate and the governor is out of the country and there's no chance for a pardon. Write like you're clinging to the edge of a cliff, white knuckles, on your last breath, a...n...d you've got just one last thing to say, like (continued in comments ...)

I Love Alan Watts, fellow 18 degree Sag Rising and of course one of my favorite philosophers, despite his drunkeness. I wrote my heart out today at three different coffee shops, 20 handwritten pages, and I write small, now I'm typing them up and revising as I go. It is 2 AM, as I type page five, and I will stay up until I fall out of my chair or finish. I am a writer! I love scraping the lead across the blank page to craft symbols that pulse with meaning and glow in the morning light!

Moses Siregar III November report: I wrote 50,000 words in November and am now just about 5,000 words away from the end of my first draft, which will probably end up around 115K words. I can't tell you how happy this has made me. I _really_ love this story and I'm excited to start the long revision process soon.

Moses Siregar III Nice quote on writing and "discipline" from a 1964 article in The Writer by suspense author Patricia Highsmith, writer of 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' ... see my first comment for the quote.

"When writing becomes a habit and a necessity, the writer need never give a thought to discipline, because writing is a pleasure. Then friends and relatives will say, "Ah, what discipline!" on seeing the writer at work, not realizing that it would take more discipline than they dream of for him to spend the next few hours in their company."

Moses, here is another author (of Eat, Pray, Love) with an inspiring take on the writing process. it's inviting the genius to join us, rather than bearing the pressure of being the genius.
I wanted to share it with you today!

Moses Siregar III After 13 days, I'm more than half-way to the NaNoWriMo goal of 50K words this month. I'm sitting at 27K right now, making this by far my most productive month of writing. It has taken exceptional focus for me to write this much, though. It's pretty intense, but I'm also really enjoying it.

I really don't like hot tubs. I come out looking like a lobster (being a redhead and fair-skinned). I'd prefer a massage to a hot tub any day.

Moses Siregar III A 1938 article called: "The Professional Writer" by Somerset Maugham. It ends up as a profound piece about the spiritual liberation of the writer/artist. I found this in the 'Classic Writing' section of the writermag.com website.

Moses Siregar III After writing more than 2K words today, I changed my mind. I AM going to do NaNoWriMo this month (National Novel Writing Month, which is always in November). The goal: 50K words. You need to average 1,667 words a day to "win." 1 down, 29 more days to go. Here's my spartan member page at the NaNo website where I'll be u...pdating my monthly totals daily:

Btw, thanks Jenny. Just knowing that some people I know would read it makes the whole idea of it that much sweeter. It's almost the biggest part of it for me. I really, really like the story, too. I actually tear up sometimes when I feel it all coming together. It's incredible for me.

Moses Siregar III October report: 16K words written (55K total). The bad: less than last month's 21K. The good: my last 4 days writing were all 1K+ days (been visualizing writing 1,500 words a day, and when I have written recently I'm getting close to that). Also learned that drinking a beer and writing does not work for me (makes me ve...ry unproductive). I'm excited for a new month and will try to be inspired by NaNoWrMo. Wish me luck!

NaNo is National Novel Writer's Month, which is always 'observed' in November. To participate you're supposed to write 50,000 words in that month. I'm not necessarily going for that, but I'm inspired by the idea of it. If I wasn't in the middle of a novel project already, I might've tried it this year. But you're supposed to start a new project for NaNo. There's a NaNo website for anyone that's curious.

Hi Jen, no problem. Let's catch up some day, though. I'm going to try to increase my output a bit for NaNoWriMo, but at this stage in the game, I don't know if I could pull off one of those 50K word months. I seem to be more the tortoise than the hare these days :-)
