Musicadium FROM HYPEBOT: Unsigned Manchester UK band The Get Out Clause performed in front of a number of surveillance cameras on buses and streets and other public places around the country. They then used The Data Protection Act (the UK's version of US' Freedom Of Information Act) to get copies of the tapes and edited them into a video that's become a viral hit.

Musicadium Today's Question: Does everyone in your band have a role to play in the running of the band's business, is there one person who does everything, or do you have a manager?

Melissa at 1:40am July 1
I do all of the promotional/webby/behind the scenes stuff. I run the band in cahoots with my partner who is the official manager. We call him Mister Manager...or 'Tough Love' Tudorov...or...well I cant tell you the other name incase he's on here...but he gets us the work cos he dont take no crap from venues or agents, he just keeps negotiating whereas Id probably just spit in their eye and walk out in a huff :)

Musicadium at 5:08pm July 1
Hopefully Mister Manager gets stuff done for you, Melissa! Do you find having a manager allows the band more time to be creative and get more writing done?

Melissa at 7:12am July 2
I would say it seems the more time you have, the more you waste it!

Musicadium How do you buy your music these days? Digital or Physical?
Musicadium at 5:02pm June 30
@Nathan especially if your name is in the liners! What about digital booklets, hi-res, with possibly more artwork and more in them than perhaps the physical booklet? Is it simply the act of HOLDING it in your hands that you want?
Daz at 9:14pm June 30
I would maybe buy individual tracks digitally but generally prefer the whole album with liner notes etc

Musicadium Pondering this: In a second wave of major restructuring, MySpace announced this morning that it will cut 300 of its 450 international staffers and close at least four overseas offices. That is ROUGH. In a HypeBot poll last week, MySpace was voted still relevant as a music marketing tool, albeit a hard one to use. Penny for your thoughts?

I still have my site...but I don't use it near as much as I used to. I have my own offical site now where I can sell product...and pretty well control everything including my stats etc. I think facebook has more advantages these days as a music networking tool.
Musicadium at 11:58pm June 23
Exactly my thoughts, Andrew. Even Facebook is proving to be almost a better EPK for bands to pimp their wares to industry and fans as it at least has a standard look and feel. There are so many cluttered and poorly designed band myspaces.
Tim at 4:06am June 24
People criticise the myspace interface.. that's not the issue for me, because the graphics and sound on myspace players allow for artists to express their individuality both visually and sonically, whereas facebook looks like a geeky computer site. Social networking is faddish. What's missing from myspace is good music industry journalism on the myspace site.. e.g. in the pull down myspace menus at top of page, music news feeds from Rollingstone, NME..

The challenge for independent artists, label managers, artist managers and anyone working with artists in online marketing is deciding where to apportion effort.

Agreeing with statement from hypebot: So why can't the industry offer blanket licenses that monetize these sites instead of enriching lawyers? The alternative is an endless game of global whack-a-mole.
Thoughts?
