Arielle Nash
Arielle Nash
Paul has studied under the direct guidance of Sri OP Tiwari, one of the last living masters of Pranayama direct from the Kavalyadam in India for many years. He has been passed on this ability to teach from his own direct experience in practice.
Patanjali emphasizes Asana is the prerequisite being steady and strong before engaging in pranayama in the Sutras (II.49). The Hatha Pradipika states that asana and food should be correct, then learn it from a COMPETENT teacher. At this point, the descriptions are directed toward going beyond breathing to the art of retention, built slowly and gradually. Paul does not teach Kumbhaka to beginners. He teaches from the roots and science of this ancient art --- only after many years of study and having taught many students himself.
He thoroughly understands the essence of pranayama and has experienced himself it's benefits. He has learned direct from the source of teaching, he teaches with authenticity in eastern tradition. The emphasis is on the importance of practice, and repetition under guidance, while continuing on the path of the 8 limbs. With beginners, he focuses on the awareness of breath, giving a preparatory practice to build the foundation to grow in it. He gives students a base from which to develop their respiratory muscles, required for BOTH asana and further pranayama practices. He works with each student individually to help them begin and then in time, develop and grow.
Swami Vivekananda says "Pranayama really means controlling the motion of the lungs, and this motion is associated with the breath. So, pranayama is not breathing, but controlling that muscular power that controls the lungs."

Yoga teachers in the west often jump to judge that in which they have very little personal experience or training. Most western teachers have never themselves been exposed to proper teaching of these practices. No, they are not something you master in a weekend ---- and many do not in a lifetime. Having Paul in Vancouver to teach from a place of truth was a blessing for those who welcomed him and were ready for his teachings. Validation beyond this is not necessary, those who are open to truth understand.
