Hi Betty Boo, thanks for your message. We see your concern and want to assure you that this FB update was made before we were fully aware of the flooding situation in the Lakes.

I would like to assure you that we pride ourselves in being a community orintated charity and want you to know that our team in the Lakes are working really hard to help out our neighbours also affected by the flood.

We will be working hard to share both our manpower and our machine power and please be assured, we are fully aware how very many people have been affected (including many of our own team).... See More

As for our fundraising email, our intention here was to update members on what was happening and to make them aware that many of our historic place and spaces have been badly hit.

Please rest assured that while we are a charity who work hard to rescue heritage and nature, we are also aware that Cockermouth is a small community and many of the small businesses you refer to are dependent on visitors to the area to keep their businesses alive. This is another reason why we know we need to preserve our places as soon as possible - to encourage visitors to return to the villages ASAP and help get the entire community back on track ASAP.

We have also been using a range of other forms of media to raise public awareness of the situation in Cumbria, not just surrounding the Trust, so that as much help can be brought in as possible - this includes our Twitter feed which has been updating our followers on the overall flood situation. As a result of this feed many kind members of the public have offered volunteer support for the entire area and we hope that we can continue to generate interest and support in these terrible times.

Once again, please know everything we do is done with the ENTIRE community’s best interest at heart and we will continue to work closely with our friends and neighbours to help return these villages in the Lakes to the wonderful places we know and love them to be.

I hope this reassures you that we meant well and if you have any other concerns please feel free to send an email to internet@nationaltrust.org.uk. Many thanks
