I know the Navy Chaplains Corps supplies chaplains to the U.S. Coast Guard. I am a volunteer member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. I know, as a member if USCGAUX, I cannot be a chaplain.

In other parts of USCG, members of USCGAUX can act to augment an office as a volunteer. Can members of the USCGAUX volunteer to... assist the chaplain's office as an administrative aide or other type of volunteer for the chaplains offices?

Thanks!

Ordice Gallups

Ordice Gallups I am too old to join the Navy Chaplain Corp. Is there anyway I can help the Navy Chaplain Corps as an unpaid volunteer? I would be willing to help with chapel administration, religious education, etc.

Also, I know sometimes priests are hired as a contract assistant. How can I find out about acting as an "auxiliary" or "contract" chaplain?

Thanks!

The bottom line is this: Without a masters degree (at least 72 graduate hours in theology) you will not qualify for the Chaplain corps- but I am sure you have already looked online at the basic requirements.

I would love to give help you with some answers. Email me directly at gregory.hazlett@tdnba02.seabee.navy.mil and lets see what we can do to assist you.

If you click on the Discussions Tab just above you will note a variety of discussion topics. Please check out "List of Requirements for Navy Chaplaincy". As Chaplain Hazlett has indicated, the graduate degree is not waiverable. And, depending on who your endorser is, their requirements may be stricter than those of the Department of Defense, in ... Read Morewhich case, you would have to satisfy the stricter requirements of your endorsing body. One option would be the Chaplain Candidate Program Officer Program for full time seminarians, but that means you will have to complete your Bachelors degree and be accepted and matriculated/ and or enrolled full time in an accredited seminary. The CCPO Program description is also described under the Discussions Tab. Please feel free to contact me as the Director of Accessions/Program Manager, or other chaplains who can help answer those pressing questions.

I know that the Army and the Air Force do offer tuition assistance with their chaplain student programs, and if that is a real issue, you might check into those. While the Navy does not have a formal tuition assistance or scholarship program for seminarians at this time, there is still an opportunity to make a considerable amount of money in the summers while trainiing, and indivdiduals can resign their commission at any time without penalty, though we hope that they don't.

Another source for scholarships is the Military Chaplains Association - they provide scholarships annually to Chaplain Candidates. While scholarships are important you have to be sure you are willing to serve according to your passion and calling - Navy ministry is unlike any of the others!
