Linda,

DOC and DOCG are given to appellations in Italy and provide rules as to what is allowed in each appellation. DOCG status is granted to the best appellations, DOC status for lesser appellations.

Chianti Classico is a DOCG appellation. Try Fontodi, Felsina, and Fonterutoli, known as the 3 F's of Chianti Classico

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, not to be confused with the lesser Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, is also made from Sangiovese (called Prugnolo in Montepulciano), I love Poliziano and Dei

Brunello is the clone of Sangiovese in Montalcino. Brunelli are some of Italy's finest reds and priced accordingly. For a good deal, drink a Rosso di Montalcino from a good producer in a great vintage. I love the wines of Ciacci Piccolomini, Casanova di Neri, and even the ubiquitous Castello Banfi can be good.

I hope this helps. Good Luck.

Christopher,

I'm not a wine drinker. My vice of preference is coffee - black as hell, no sugar.

Chris: Silver Oak Cabernet, Seghesio Zinfandel, Grand Amis from Lodi (don't remember the winery) Seven Deadly Zins and Icognit0-- both from Phillips Winery.

I need recommendations for the following types of Italian (Tuscany) wines 1) good Chianti Classicos (the ones with the black rooster symbol- as opposed to just plain old Chianti wines 2) good vino Nobiles from Monetepuliciano-- either DOGC or DOC wines 3) good Brunellos from Montalcino-- again either DOGC or DOC designations will do.

As you can see I've read enough to know what to ask for, but I don't know which brands to try.

Thanks!
