Peggy was my first advisor in the fall 1974. I remember her evaluation of me in one of her classes that my work was perfunctory...I had to look up the word. I've learned over the years that my toughest teachers were always the best as was definitely the case with Peggy. At my baccalaureate, she asked me a question about one of my earlier political... Read More classes, something about Jefferson. I remember staring around her apt. in 1st court, thinking and then saying something fairly brilliant. She taught me how to read 10 books in a week, but mostly how to think critically and not be affraid to proffer my opinion, as long as I could back it up. Thank you, Peggy! You are sorely missed.

New College Hillel is very excited to announce that the Israeli Consulate of Miami is coming to New College to do a screening of the moving and powerful film, "ואלס עם בשיר" ("Waltz with Bashir") this Wednesday, November 4th, in the TA at 3:30 PM.

The movie, winner of 6 Israeli Academy Awards and nominated for the Best... Foreign Film at the Oscars, is an intense exploration of director Ari Folman's own experiences as a young IDF soldier in the 1982 Lebanon War and his difficulty in piecing together what exactly happened and what his involvement was.

Here is a brief synopsis of the film:

In 1982 [Ari] Folman was a 19 year old infantry soldier in the Israel Defense Forces. In 2006 he meets with a friend from the army service period, who tells him of the nightmares connected to his experiences from the 1982 Lebanon War. Folman is surprised to find out that he does not remember a thing from the same period. Later that night he has a vision from the night of the Sabra and Shatila massacre the reality of which he is unable to tell. In his memory he and his soldier friends are bathing at night by the seaside in Beirut to the light of flares descending over the city. Folman rushes off to meet another friend from his army service, who advises him to discuss it with other people who were in Beirut at the same time to understand what happened there and to relive his own memory.

The film follows Folman in his conversations with friends, a psychologist and the reporter Ron Ben-Yishai who was in Beirut at the same time. (Source: http://www.movieweb.com/movies/film/FI2Gba57X8JM54)

There will be refreshments provided by Hillel. Following the film, a Q&A session will be held with Paul Hirschson, Deputy-Consul General of Israel at the Israeli Consulate in Miami. They are running on a tight schedule, so we encourage everyone who wants to attend to be as prompt as possible. The movie itself is 86 minutes long so there shall be plenty of time to discuss and ask questions. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me or any of the Hillel officers.

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED TO NOVEMBER 17.

The End of the Line, the first major feature documentary film revealing the impact of overfishing on our oceans, had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Documentary Competition.

In the film we see firsthand the effects of our global love aff...air with fish as food.

It examines the imminent extinction of bluefin tuna, brought on by increasing western demand for sushi; the impact on marine life resulting in huge overpopulation of jellyfish; and the profound implications of a future world with no fish that would bring certain mass starvation.

Filmed over two years, The End of the Line follows the investigative reporter Charles Clover as he confronts politicians and celebrity restaurateurs, who exhibit little regard for the damage they are doing to the oceans.

One of his allies is the former tuna farmer turned whistleblower Roberto Mielgo – on the trail of those destroying the world's magnificent bluefin tuna population.

Filmed across the world – from the Straits of Gibraltar to the coasts of Senegal and Alaska to the Tokyo fish market – featuring top scientists, indigenous fishermen and fisheries enforcement officials, The End of the Line is a wake-up call to the world.

This will be a free screening for New College students, faculty, and staff and we are asking for a donation from public attendees.

The New College Environmental Studies Program is sponsoring this event.
