Please Join our Natural Sciences Seminar on Friday, December 4, 2009 at 3:30 pm in the Soo Bong Chae Auditorium in the Heiser Natural Science Building. Dmitri Litvinov from the University of Houston will give a talk entitled “Nanomagnetics: Leveraging Basic Research to Develop Technologies of the Future.” This event ...is free and open to the public. Please bring a friend or colleague.

Nanomagnetics encompasses materials, devices, and systems that have their functional magnetic building blocks with dimensions smaller than the characteristic length, the domain wall thickness, of the constituent magnetic materials. Such single magnetic domain building blocks promise to enable unprecedented functionalities far beyond what is achievable in conventional macroscopic systems. This presentation will summarize state-of-the-art interdisciplinary nanomagnetics research at the Center for Integrated Nanosystems (University of Houston) including the development of nanoscale bit-patterned magnetic recording medium, nanomagnetic biosensor arrays, magnetic cellular logic, fabrication and metrology for nanomagnetic devices. A projection of relevant experiences gained in the course of the Center development onto challenges facing nanoelectronics, molecular and organic electronics, spintronics, and nanomagnetics research will be given.

Author Blake Bulter will give a lecture/reading at the Four Winds Cafe on November 21 at 5:00 pm. Blake Butler lives in Atlanta and edits ‘the online literature magazine blog of the future’ HTML Giant. He is the author of Ever (Calamari Press) and Scorch Atlas (Featherproof Books). Some other work has appeared in Fenc...e, Willow Springs, New York Tyrant, and The Believer. In Winter 2010, Harper Perennial will publish his novel about young death, and in 2011, a nonfiction book about insomnia.

A fun-meant lecture about using language as hypnosis and in barking rather than a cause for nodding off. May or may include looks at work by Gary Lutz, Barry Hannah, David Lynch, Brian Evenson, Harmony Korine, Amy Hempel, Lara Glenum, Sean Kilpatrick. Will definitely involve Three 6 Mafia and a bloodbag for the groupthink moves often found in workshopping, publishing, and language at large.

The most you can score on an ACT is 36. The 32 is ~1420 on an SAT out of 1600 so that's a pretty good score.
