Edgar Lee Hewett was the first director of the Museum of New Mexico from 1909 until his death in 1946. He taught anthropology at UNM and was instrumental in encouraging the development of small museums throughout New Mexico. NMAM bestows two yearly awards in his honor.

This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to studying Latino cultural productions, primarily practices of exhibiting material culture. We will visit local and regional sites of cultural display (museums, cultural centers, gallerie...s, and works of public art). We will also read, consider, discuss, and write about Chican@/Hispan@/Mexican@ culture and its representation; museum histories, theories, and debates; and how cultural forms are produced, preserved, and disputed.
