No On 1033

Times are tough enough -- but Tim Eyman’s Initiative 1033 would make them worse.

Eyman’s I-1033 is a proven failure. In 1992, citizens in Colorado passed a similar law with disastrous consequences. The share of low-income kids without health insurance doubled. Colorado’s per capita funding for education plummeted to 49th in nation. The state couldn’t even afford to vaccinate children entering school to help protect against diseases like whooping cough. It’s no wonder Colorado voters suspended the law in 2005.

Eyman’s I-1033 will make it harder to dig out of this recession. The national recession has cost our state thousands of jobs and forced billions of dollars in cuts to education and health care. I-1033 will delay our economic recovery and cause more hard times for Washington families.

Eyman’s I-1033 threatens health care and education in our state. This year, 40,000 low-income people in Washington have lost their health insurance. $1.5 billion has been slashed from education, taking resources away from kids and classrooms. And as many as 3,000 teachers and school employees face layoffs. As the economy recovers, we could restore funding to education and health care -- but I-1033 would make these cuts permanent and force even deeper cuts in the future.
