Songs I recommend you learn.

"Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin

Stairway is one of the most popular guitar songs of all time and for good reason: It includes a variety of great guitar parts and is like a sampler platter of guitar technique and chord theory. Many guitar players pick up on unique chord shapes and interesting chord voicings by learning this song. And I reference Stairway several times throughout my book, Fretboard Theory, on using the CAGED system. Furthermore, the lead guitar solo uses pentatonic and major scale patterns over a standard minor chord progression in Aeolian mode.
"Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton

Tears in Heaven, which I also reference a lot in my lessons, is another song that is LOADED with chord technique and theory. In this song, common open chords are made new when they are moved up and played as partial barre chords with alternate bass notes. These chords are finger picked and played as specific chord inversions and chord voicings. An additional guitar in the song plays double-stop riffs with the pentatonic scale.
"Under the Bridge" by Red Hot Chili Peppers

Yet another song that can teach guitar players a lot about how to get something new and exciting out of common chords. The way in which the guitar riffs and jams around standard barre chord shapes with chord fragments and extensions is reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix's flashy rhythm style. This song also includes some great chord movement that stems directly out of the progression patterns I teach in my book and DVDs.
I taught these three songs in lessons for years and reference them throughout my guitar theory books and DVDs. I'd be lying if I said that I didn't steal licks and phrases from these examples for use in my own playing. I do! Many guitar players do.
