MY LETTER TO THE IRS

by Shane Claiborne on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 7:22am ·

As a Christian, Easter marks the most stunning act of grace and enemy-love in human history – Jesus’ death and resurrection.  As Jesus was being tortured and executed, he cried out for mercy, even for those terrorists who hurt him.  As his buddy Peter picked up a sword and cut the ear off one of the persecutors, Jesus scolded Peter and picked up the ear and healed the wounded persecutor. The early Christians understood the message – it was a message of Amazing Grace.  It was a message about how there is something worth dying for, but nothing in the world worth killing for – not even freedom or democracy.  One of the early Christians said, “When Jesus disarmed Peter he disarmed every Christian.”  After all, we don’t see Christians picking up swords again for hundreds of years.

I am one of those Christians who believe we should still have the right NOT to kill, even in an empire that has a military bigger than Rome’s.  Perhaps that’s why it has been hard for me to navigate what to do as tax season approaches, with so much of our federal tax money going towards militarism.  It was a crisis familiar to the early Christians who were accused of insurrection and tax evasion because they had an allegiance that subverted, or super-ceded, their national allegiance.

So I respectfully filed my taxes this year, and I sent the IRS the little letter below.  My intention is to respect my country and contribute to the common good… but also to uncompromisingly follow the way of the nonviolent Jesus this Easter -- in a world that continues to pick up the sword… and die by the sword.

Dear Internal Revenue Service,

I am filing my 1040 here.  As you will see, I made $9600 this past year, and found that according to the 1040 form, I owe $324.44 of that to federal taxes.  While I am glad to contribute money to the common good and towards things that promote life and dignity, especially for the poor and most vulnerable people among us, I am deeply concerned that 30 percent of the federal budget goes towards military spending, with 117 billion going to support the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.  (Further, when we include the 18% that goes towards past military costs, such as the 380 billion in debt payments, 80% of which are military related debts, that number goes up to a total military budget of 1,372 billion dollars -- nearly half of the federal budget).  My Christian faith and my human conscience require me to respectfully reserve the right not to kill, and to refrain from contributing money towards weapons and the military.

For this reason, I am enclosing a check for $227.11, which is, according to the form, 70% of what I owe.  The remaining $97.33 represents 30% of my tax payment, the amount that would go towards military spending.   I will donate this remaining 30% to a recognized US nonprofit organization working to bring peace and reconciliation.  My faith also compels me to submit to the governing authorities, which is why I am writing you respectfully and transparently here.  I am glad to discuss this further if you have any questions.

May we continue to build the world we dream of.

–Shane Claiborne

    • Tony Pegel Great as always, Shane.
    • Derrell DeLoach Thought provoking....just like everything else you do.
    • Michael McDaid Shane I don't agree with a lot of the way government spends our money. But Jesus taught us to give to Caesar what is Caesar. So I cheerfully give. But you can use charitable giving as a deductible so you can use your money to do good and get money taken off your tax payments.
    • Keith Ford Awesome sauce! Wish I could pull this off but my taxes are taken out of my check and I don't owe much at the end of the year. Well, guess I've got another year to figure it out. Thanks for the inspiration.
    • Darren Richards Challenging and Intelligent
    • Aimee Barnes Beautiful.
    • Brandon RichardWebster While this might work if one person does it or even a few, if the entire Christian population did this it would be futile. Your message is still a thought provoking lesson that everyone should examine for themselves.
    • Mike Rayson I'd like to participate Shane... but not filing and paying taxes for me (a non-citizen permanent resident) would mean deportation.
    • Taeko O'shima HERO
    • Nick Barnard He'll get a response because his check is short and he hasn't already made the donation. Well played Shane, I pray that your obedience is rewarded assuming that it's God telling you to do this. Just a heart check from a non-violent bro.
    • Jonah Porter Good luck with that. Theoretically, 30% of what you sent is still going there, sad to say.
    • Ann Marie Hake Hughes Quakers do this now and then, you'll catch a story on the legal trouble they go through and how they handle it. http://www.warresisters.org/whoweare might be helpful if you wind up getting some headaches over this. Otherwise FGC (Friends General Conference) might have some information and support for you as well or I can help get information from other Friends who are more knowledgable on the subject than I am.
    • Joe Simpson Is this a case of trying to be more holy than Jesus? There is a verse in proverbs about being too righteous. I mean Jesus just paid the tax and didn't go thru all that. Using your formula could we not say that when Jesus paid the ENTIRE tax to a militaristic state He bid ALL Christians to do so?
    • Jacob Neff Yeah, Quakers have been doing this for years. It's good to see some of these different letters (Thank you Ann) though. My wife and I decided that we will be tax resistors as well.
    • Alice Scott-Ferguson SO respect your convictions and its attendant courage...have shared this w/my growing and grown granchildren!
    • Eric Treider Shane, thanks for continuing to show us the way -- you're a modern-day prophet, friend! Who says God quit sending us messengers???? Now I'm challenged about this and truthfully I can say I don't know what to do but I'll be thinking about it and praying about it.
    • Shane Claiborne ‎@ Jonathan Young - give it away (to a group working for God's peace )
    • Shane Claiborne Thanks for all the support guys!
    • Klaus Lundberg I like this. Unfortunately, we can not do the same in Denmark as our tax system doesn't work like that. Our tax is paid directly, before we get our part. But it is a great way of telling people and goverment that you don't support war.
    • Filipe Terra
I tend to agree with you guys on being against war and violence. But sometimes I just think do we mean by being against war that all soldiers are actually sinners only because of their profession? I mean can we find a way of not being judgm...ental on this issue?

But I come from another reality, I'm from Brazil, we are not the most militaristic country in the world, even though we do suffer with our internal violence most of the times.

    • Jessica Vang I'm glad you shared this note with us. I had no idea the government was spending so much of our tax money on the military and that much of our federal debt is also from the military. Wow...I truly admire your commitment to peace.
    • Jana Gingerich Amen, brother! Thanks for sharing!
    • Sami Bashlor Bolger Amen!
    • Katie Apodaca It would be really awesome if we could choose to allocate our taxes to the programs that we deem valuable and see what happens. Even just as a study that would be really interesting. I have this dilemma as well, I just hope that they don't take the remainder of that money to buy more swords.

My american friend Robin has a good point that I didnt think of..perhaps you should reconsider, or do this as a form of activism then pay the rest anyways sooner rather than later? They'll mark what he held back as money owing, and start put...ting penalties on it as time goes by. If he has a tax refund, they'll take it out of there; if not, they'll come after him and take it. Either way, he'll end up paying MORE than if he'd just paid it to begin with, so ultimately he's going to be putting more money into the war machine than necessary. I get what he was trying to do, but what he's actually going to accomplish is the exact opposite.See More

    • Carol Alderton Hi Shane - Nice one. I'm wondering how this will work in the UK tax system. I feel some research coming on.

‎"Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebellin...g against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. Romans 13:1-7See More

In order for a nation to secure its liberty or preserve and protect the lives of its citizens, isn’t it necessary to have some sort of police force? Not all war is bad especially when people are persecuted and subjected to ...unmentionable ...atrocities caused by unimpeded aggression of invading armies, criminals, and blood thirsty tyrants. Clearly, the Bible, as in Joshua 6:21 and Deuteronomy 20:5-7, stresses that war can be sanctioned by GOD. The key is the belief that the motivations of this nation are based in faith and prayer and not in sin. Make no mistake that GOD will use war when necessary! Let’s never forget the words of Ecclesiastes 3:1-8:
To every [thing there is] a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
… A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

    • Abraham Nedumparambill Abraham ‎... also your tax payments are going to fund the mess greedy people make in the capital markets, to make good the sub-prime loans and to pay huge bonuses for the finance company CEOs. What to do? In any system, we cannot put to good use 100% of the effort in a worthy manner. Thanks for the Post ... it does speak volumes of thoughts !

Shane, I LOVE you Brother and am incredibly inspired by you. .....that being said.....Brother, here's the thing though, it's not the IRS who decides on where the money is spent Brother. I wish you the best in this matter and wil...l be prayerful. And I really don't think you have anything to be worried about legally. The IRS is not interested in pursuing someone who makes c. $9k a year. On the other hand, if someone at the IRS knows who you are (e.g. that many people look to you for spiritual leadership)...they may possibly go for you as an example. Of course, if media catches wind of the IRS going for you, this could be a great opportunity to speak out even louder. Bro, no matter what, even though I <kinda disagree> with your choice here, I support you and am with you. Shoot, bro, I'll even pay the $270 or whatever if that will keep you out of jail! Again, regardless, I'll be praying for you. Gonna go add this to my prayer list now. We love you brother.See More
    • Craig Davis If no one else has seen this link, it is what opened my eyes to that which Shane is talking about. How much of YOUR money funds "national defense" and how much funds education? TELL SOMEONE ABOUT IT! http://www.whitehouse.gov/files/taxreceipt/index.html
    • Melissa Dionne Please keep us all informed on the government's actions. I must admit that I would be afraid to do what you did. My taxes are taken directly from my check, but I could change my withholdings so I get more back and owe taxes at the end of the year. I might do that for next year.
    • Dave Brauer-Rieke My wife and I consider tax resistance many years ago. I was there save for Romans 13 and the hypocrisy of benefiting from that government I had problems supporting. Asking the WWJD question I realized Jesus avoided the problem through voluntary poverty. "Take up your cross and follow." all of a sudden became a little too real. It's still a struggle!
    • Thomas LeBombe Tucker WOW!!! you are a genious! great revolt!
    • John Roche What was the formal response to this from IRS?
