Colors in Design

The use of color can have a tremendous effect on the mood of an event. There have been many studies on how colors effect our emotions and their impact on our daily lives. Many people even believe that colors have special powers. Without trying to give a lesson on the metaphysics of colors, here are some of the meanings of colors for your consideration when designing your events.

Red
Action, Confidence

Red is the warmest of all colors. It is the color of joy and prosperity. It can also represent anger or rage. Red roses symbolize passionate love. Use red in your event design when you want to increase energy and interest and when you want to build confidence.

Pink
Contentment, Beauty

Pink combines the effects of red and white and therefore, the amount of red that is present will have a determining factor. Darker shades of pink are good for neutralizing disorder. Colors such as magenta are even used in some prisons to diffuse aggressive behavior. Lighter shades provide feelings of love and acceptance. Use pink in your event design when you want to calm the crowd and provide a feeling of acceptance.

Orange
Enthusiasm, Creativity

Orange is a great color to use when you want to shake things up a bit. It stimulates curiosity and helps with problem solving. Orange is a dynamic color that can help increase creativity as well as interest. It should be used when you want to energize your crowd and get them thinking on their feet.

Yellow
Joy, Intellect

Yellow is the color of the thinker. It’s the color of wisdom and also clarity. It can help sharpen the memory as well as concentration. You should use the color yellow when you want to provide relief from stress and help the decision making process.

Green
Fertility, Balance

Green tends to be a very safe color that provides self-respect and harmony. It’s the color of nature and can therefore be very peaceful. Green also represents growth and transformation. You should use green in your event when you want to create a sense of balance or when you feel a need for change.

Blue
Honesty, Serenity

Blue has a very calming effect. It can help open the flow of communication and broaden your perspective. You should use the color blue in your event if you want to make your attendees feel comfortable and relaxed. Blue is very conducive to networking type events.

Indigo
Intuition, Contemplation

While the color blue helps to improve communication, indigo tends to have a somewhat opposite effect where it actually increases self-realization and insight. It’s the color often used by inventors for inspiration. It can be used in an event when you want to help develop intuition and provide a new way of viewing a problem.

Violet
Empowerment, Imagination

Violet combines the fiery energy of red with the soothing effect of blue to create an inspirational environment. Violet is another color to use when you want to provide a creative atmosphere. It will help remove mental obstacles and energize your audience.

Brown
Earth, Convention

The color brown provides a connection with the earth and the permanence it brings. It combines the energy of red while the blue and yellow add focus. Brown can help create a feeling of dependability. You should use it in your event design when you want to provide orderliness and stability.

Gold
Wisdom, Prosperity

Gold is the ultimate color of success. It’s a symbol of good health and wealth. It’s also an optimistic color and represents “the good life”. Gold is a great color to use in an event when you want to reward or congratulate your attendees.

White
Purity, Cleanliness

Because white is technically the combination of all colors, it represents completion and totality. White also represents a clean slate and a new beginning. It helps to clear the mind. White is a good color to use in an event when you are marking the completion of a process or the beginning of a new one.

Black
Mystery, Unseen

Black is actually the absence of color and is the polar opposite of white. It can be very mysterious because it is associated with the unknown. Black can help something or someone be inconspicuous and therefore helps blend things together. When used as a background, black can help accentuate the effect of other colors. You can use it in your event design when you are planning some kind of surprise or reveal.

Gray
Neutral, Calm

Gray is a neutralizing color. When combined with other colors, it will lessen the effect the other color may have. It may be useful if your intention is to reduce the intensity of another color. You can use gray in your event when you are trying to create a restful, cooling atmosphere.
