FA Cup Match Report - Warminster Town 5 - Amesbury Town 1
A Game of Two Halves
Warminster hosted local rivals Amesbury Town in the Extra Preliminary round of the F.A. Cup.
Town started the game without Mike Reaney (injured), Tom Clifford unavailable and after a collision on Wednesday Jason Guy.
As a result of the collision Jason Guy has had to announce that he is retiring from playing and concentrating on the management side of things. Anyone who knows Jason will be aware of the trouble he has had with his knee and also how devastated he is with having to hang up his boots.
For the first twenty minutes of the game it was a fairly even affair even though Warminster struggled to get out of their half and most of the play was in front of the back four with the Town giving too much respect to Amesbury. The only notable effort from either side was in the twentieth minute and this fell to Amesbury. A long range effort by Lee Bartlett beat everyone and only just went wide of the far post.
On twenty three minutes Amesbury’s Jason Bates rode a tackle by Dave Watkins and shot from 15yards out bringing out a good save from Graham Kitley.
On the half hour mark Warminster’s first real attempt came when a long kick by Kitley bounced through the defence. Matt Guy and Louis Sparey beat the offside trap Matt received the ball for a one on one with Amesbury’s keeper Tom Allatt only to pull his shot wide. Five minutes after that, with Amesbury finding holes in Warminster’s defence, Kitley produced a good save again. Thirty seven minutes in Tom Western was played through following a corner, took a shot, only to see Kitley pull off another good save.
In the last minute off the first half, and totally against the run of play, Warminster took the lead with a superbly worked effort. Tom Welch was played through behind Amesbury’s defence out on the left; he cut in, pulled the ball back to Louis Sparey who slotted home from 10 yards.
Warminster should have gone in at half time down a goal or two down but Amesbury failed to convert their chances where as The Town managed to convert theirs.
Half Time Score Warminster Town 1 Amesbury Town 0
One minute into the second half Louis Sparey was through for a one-on-one with Amesbury’s keeper, tried to side foot his shot, but ended with a comfortable save by Allatt.
Amesbury started to be stronger team again. Forty nine minutes in Jason Bates split the Towns defence and shot across goal only to see it go wide of the mark and no-one following up. Sixty three minutes saw a cross to Bates, and his shot to the near post was again thwarted by a good save from Kitley.
Amesbury levelled the score in the 66th minute when Ben Deacon, having a superb game, brought down Craig Wheeler in the penalty area. Danny Western stepped up to slot home, despite Kitley getting a hand to it.
This seemed to be a wakeup call for the Town, they started to dominate and five minutes later Tom Welch played Matt Guy in, who broke inside, rounded the keeper and side footed home to restore the lead.2-1
Three minutes later Welch again passed to Matt Guy, whose shot was blocked, James Vincent’s first follow up shot was blocked back to him so he made sure with his second effort going into the top left of the goal. 3-1
Gary Stanley and Simon Mead came on and within a minute of Simon Mead being on his header came off the crossbar. With eighty two minutes on the clock Louis Sparey collected his second when Sean Sheppard, out right, played a low squared ball into the box. Louis was running in and slotted home from close range. 4-1
The final goal came in the 83rd minute when a Tom Welch lazy looking run beat three defenders as he cut in, squared to Sparey whose shot was blocked on the line by Allatt only to see Simon Mead’s follow-up shot find the back of the net.
Final Score Warminster Town 5 Amesbury Town 1
Overall the whole team pulled together well despite being under strength. There were several players that had good games but Man of the match went to Tom Welch. Although he had an indifferent first half, in the second half his work rate was excellent. His awareness and skill helped make, or contributed to the goals. Warminster are to face either Carterton or Bristol Manor Farm (who drew 2-2 on Saturday, replay is on the 20th) on the 29th August away in the Preliminary Round of the F.A. Cup
Team: Graham Kitley, Ben Deacon, Mark Breffit, Ashley Wain (c), Dave Watkins, Sean Sheppard, James Vincent, Simon Reaney, Louis Sparey, Matt Guy, Tom Welch. Substitutes: Gary Stanley (75), Simon Mead (78).
