Don't believe the Myth - people of colour DO get skin cancer.
We are far less likely to develop skin cancer (particularly non-melanoma forms of cancer), but when we do get skin cancer we are more likely to have a higher rate of the advanced disease which can cause death:
- where - Studies have found that melanomas in brown skin develops mostly on our palms, fingers, soles, toes, areas that are easy to overlook.
- appearance - Commonly may appear in skin of colour as a singular dark nail streak on the hands or feet.
- family history - ensure you know if there is any cancer history in your family, this will help you to monitor that specific areas as well as general checks.
- protect - Be aware that you are at risk
- protect - Carry out monthly checks on your skin to identify any changes. Look for dark brown or black spots either new, changed colour, raised bump, increased in size or shape.
- protect - wear sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 everyday, not just when you go to the beach or on holiday/vacation.
