MUTTS Series Highlights Shark Issues

Starting tomorrow, 8/24, and running all week on Muttscomics.com, MUTTS will highlight the plight of sharks. You may not be aware that all shark species are in steep decline and manys are endangered. 50-100 Million are killed each year. Two of the reasons? The finning of sharks for shark fin soup, and shark tournaments.

HSI did an article on the series, and The Dorsal Fin blogged about it:

In the past few days, Patrick McDonnell’s “Mutts” comic strip has been following the perils of “Tony the Shark.” In the comic strip, Tony has been expressing his fears to his crab buddy, “Crabby,” about finning and “shark killing tournaments.” The recent entries in the comic strip are a clever play on the role-reversal of sharks having more to fear from humans than humans having to fear from sharks.

Years ago, I watched a Jacques Cousteau special on public broadcasting showing the wholesale slaughter of sharks by his crew. They were "angry" at the sharks for attacks on divers. I was horrified, and could never see Cousteau in a positive light again.

If people would stop believing in the so called aphrodesiac properties of shark fin, then there would be more sharks alive!

I like to let animals live in their habitat, free from the encroachment of humanity and other predatory creatures. I am not a fan of sharks, but I believe they have the right to live in the world they have inhabited for millenia. Killing to kill is cruel, pointless, and cheapens the life of one who does it. If you don't need it to survive, don't... See More kill it. "Sport" is passe. Killing marine life because you can is pretty despicable. But then, I prefer "lesser animals" like dogs and cats--they don't try to hurt me, backstab, etc. They just love me for me.

C'mon Frank! How many people get their legs chewed off by sharks, when invading shark territory, and how many get their legs blown off by landmines in their own backyards. Who are the real mindless killers here? A shark hunting for food, or a man deciding to play God?
