Why I will not boycott Facebook on May 20, 2010

by Adnan Ali on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 6:23am ·

My name is Adnan Ali and this is why I will not sign off or boycott Facebook on May 20, 2010.

As you know someone has created a page on Facebook to collaborate the “Draw Muhammad Day”, NauzibAllah , Astaghfar, shame on the antagonist and participants.

Muslims on Facebook are outraged by this act of blasphemy and due to our immense respect and love for our Prophet Muhammad PBUH, have been reporting the page in the Racist / Hate Speech category. I have done so myself. Apparently Facebook has not acted upon what we Muslims think are its own rules and policies about user generated content on Facebook.

Since then, there has been a growing demand by the Muslims on Facebook to boycott the platform and it has been rumored that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has been asked by the Pakistan government to block Facebook or the disputed Page’s URL. [Update: ProPakistani.pk is reporting that PTA has indeed blocked the Page URL.]

I will not be supporting any such boycott by Muslim users of Facebook, nor shall I support any block or ban by the PTA. Here is why:
1. Boycotts are the easy way out. Boycotts achieve little and they are just a self satisfaction tool.

2. If the 2,359,620 Pakistanis choose to delete their accounts on Facebook, it is going to make no economic or social difference on Facebook.

3. This is a media war. Muslims have always been prone to emotional discourse which provides immense pleasure to our enemies. Moreover, boycotts are going to leave the social media space open for those who hold wrong beliefs about our Prophet PBUH.

4. Why should PTA ban this page in Pakistan? It does not have jurisdiction over other countries. So, PTA is stopping Muslims in Pakistan from accessing this page? How does that make sense? Why are Muslims in Pakistanis visiting this page in the first place? I think that no Muslim worth his salt would visit such pages and therefore PTA can stay away from banning the internet.

5. Allowing government interruption and censure on the internet will lead to precedence. Which sites will be next? Local sites where the government is criticized for politics and policy? This is a wrong and dangerous step and we should not in any case accept government censure of the internet in Pakistan.

6. Boycotting something like this will only give it more life. Imagine all the status messages that have the link of the page. We are actually spreading this virus rather than burying it. Add to this, other pages and groups created by Muslims which highlight the content of the blasphemous page. This is ridiculous behavior.

7. Our emotional outbursts are only going to be picked up by mainstream media and then everyone can join and laugh at our activities.

8. For most of us so called aggrieved people, we disrespect, ridicule and deny the teachings of Prophet Muhammad PBUH when we do not offer prayers, do not fast, lie, steal, bribe or accept bribes, engage in immoral activities etc. So I do not consider that being a Muslim gives us any moral high ground in this situation. As Muslim youth, we are the least educated in Islam. A majority has not opened the Quran or read a Tafseer in ages. A little introspection never hurts.

Here is what I would do if I was so inclined to do so:

1. Instead of promoting the blasphemous content by adding the link to my status message and creating groups and pages that showcase this content, I would sit and contemplate why this is happening.

2. Have no confusion; this is another organized attack just like the original cartoons. They know how we will react to such outrageous behavior. They know that we will boil our blood in emotional outrage and then destroy our own properties, kill our own citizens and provide another body blow to our weak economy.

3. As a reply, I would create a Facebook Group or Page to praise the Prophet Muhammad PBUH, highlight his teachings, his achievements, and his famous sayings, how he taught us to treat the poor and the children and the women. How the Prophet Muhammad PBUH urged caution and care and taught rules even for war.

4. I would ask people to record 1 minute videos about why they love Prophet Muhammad PBUH and recite their favorite Hadeeth.

5. I would narrate how Islam teaches respect for all Prophets of Allah and our faith is incomplete without believing in the Prophets of Allah.

6. I would encourage western and non-muslim scholars to visit the page and add their comments about this issue.

7. I would hope and encourage all Muslims to join this page rather than having small silos of their own. In fact, unity is the only solution here.

I am confident that my solution is better than emotional outbursts and impotent activities like boycotts and governments bans of websites.

Some of the ideas you've given are really good. I had thought that contests should be held for people to express, through art, what Muhammad means to them - in other words, how his name and life's legacy inspires them.

Do understand, howev...er, that individual boycotts are not meaningless bursts of emotion, nor are they the work of irrational people, as some of the posters above are suggesting.

Peaceful protest is legitimate and necessary, even if it is for a day. It is everyone's right. Sitting and introspecting on the state of Muslims may be a productive exercise generally, but it will do nothing to get your message across today - which is that a group promoting religious intolerance and derision was formed on Facebook, and it was not removed by the Facebook administration.

Those who started the group claimed to do so because they believed in freedom of speech. Those who boycotted did so because they saw it as a savage attack on something they held dear. Both parties, in their own way, took principled stands. Any day of the week, that is better than taking no stand at all.

    • Sarmad Javed mate, there is no need to sit back and contemplate whats happening. There is a need to sit back and understand the internet. This is what WWW is. Its the ultimate freedom of expression. It has no religion, morals or an understanding of good and evil. Crying and kicking will not bring this to a halt because nothing can. A hungry man-eater doesn't care if you have wife or kids. Its a jungle out here. Climb a tree or get out.
    • Gino Kickz i really liked how you cleared it up

      ‎@ Afia Aslam, beautifully said.
Both reactions are stemming from Mohabbat. One isn't better than the other. Both are correct in their own rights.

Rasoolullah Salallahu alaehe'wassalam chose to migrate from Makkah to Madian secretly (seei...ng Hikmah in it) whereas Hazrat Omar raziAllahu unhu migrated with an announcement, i-e who ever wants his mother to grieve the lose of her son, his wife to become widow or his children to become orphans, meet me behind that valley.

@ Sarmad, what you're saying is nonsense. If that was the case then anything we say should also not be accountable, but it is. Try saying "bomb" on a plane and see for yourself what freedom of expression gets you in. Just because you're behind the screen doesn't mean you won't be accountable for what you do or say on the net.

Kufaar and munafiqeen in those times also expressed their freedom thru name-calling. One such word is mentioned in Quran. The word itself wasn't necessarily a curse but they used the word to make fun of Rasoolullah Sw, and momineen were told not to say the word and Prophet Mohammad SW himself simply shrugged it off..

One q: if cartoons were drawn of your mother, graphic obscene stuff. would u shrug it off saying its freedom of expression? if Not, then know this that,
"no one is a momin until he loves ALLAH and me (Prophet Mohammad Sw) more than he loves his parents, his siblings, his kin, his work .. anything."

The reactions you're witnessing are because of something known as "ghairat", and the most Ghayoor of all is ALLAH Swt himself.

    • John Butt It is gratifying to see so many agreeing with this expression of clear thinking, which is absolutely in accordance with the words of the Quran: "Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. Leave it to me to deal with the deniers, and bear with them a little longer." (73:10-11)
    • Shazia Rafi I TOTALLY AGREE :) GREAT ARTICLE BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :)
    • Omar Qadri Totally the way I see it. Well written!
    • Amna Khalid now we are talking.
    • Sarah J.K I absolutely agree

and I love that verse John Butt, people tend to
overlook the teachings of the Quran and perceive only what suits them unfortunately.

    • Mian Fahad Ahmed well said but the solution you gave us isnt going to stop them from blasphemy.they are still going to go forward with what they were doing!!need to think about that too!!we just can not ignore the fact that our holy prophet is being disrespected.because they don not think that it is wrong to sketch our holy prophets(P.B.U.H) pictures!!

I have heard that it was not a blow at all! to facebook's business, infact it gave them bigger business, for millions stopped by to actually witness that page and find out for themselves as to what this was all about... they actually profit...ed and benefitted from Pakistan's banning action to FB and only 2 million Pakistani didn't visit FB, but millions and millions more did! what a shame... I wish our approach to tackiling and handling these situations get wiser or else we did nothing , but more harm to our image and gave benefit to ppl. who know how to play with muslim world and their emotions... tch tch... and I totally agree that how very few of us exactly read Quran or follow prophet And especially what exactly Pakistan's image is as a muslim country- Is totally opposite of even claiming to be muslims... why KSA or Indonesia didn't take any action and why was it just Pakistan to even put a further blow to muslims' image... it was just another hidden propaganda to divert attention of Pakistanis from the real issues!See More
    • Usman Khan yes this is a media war and every one of us should participate in this media war so that worthy opinions and number of worthy opinions will make other people of the world to think what is good and what is wrong.
    • Usman Khan we should not find a way out from this media war by just simply banning internet world

‎"Members of Quraysh poked fun at the Prophet by making reference to him as “Mudammam” (a play on Muhammad) which means ugly. This offensive humour, irony if you wish, was done at the expense of the real name of the Prophet and so it was ex...ceptionally painful to his companions. Muhammad was a unique name in Mecca at that time and it means “the one who is praised.” It is the most popular name in the world today. The companions complained to the Prophet with tears in their eyes. His response was that they should ignore the mocking laughter associated with “Mudammam” because his name is Muhammad and “Mudammam” can only be someone other than Muhammad. He defused the irony, neutralized it, pulled the rug out from under it, with gentleness, wit, and humility. Muslims too could have looked at the offensive depiction and simply said: “That’s not our Prophet.”"See More

Some Jews of Medina would come to the prophet pbuh and greet him by saying "Assam o Alaikum Ya Muhammad" (Death to you O Muhammad). They would deliberately replace "Assalam" (Peace) with "Asssam" (Death). The prophet would gently reply "Wa-...alaikum" (and same to you). He once told our mother Ayesha that if they meant peace or death, it would go back to them as he knew that Allah would accept from him and not for them. These were the tolerant ways of our beloved Prophet PBUH.See More

    • Saima Butt mashallah u know we do need more sensible, educated, broad minded and knowledgeable people like u to get the message across. Islam is an intelligent and broad minded religion and doesn't promote irraational and emotional actions such as boycotting. instead we should do something productive and fruitful as u have already mentioned. May Allah swt help you in this lovely task ameen.
    • Kashif Ajmal Malik Thanks and same to you and Adnan Bhai
    • Kashif Ajmal Malik Great
    • Tarek Mj these are the exact facts , i have discussing this whole , i agree with every point of you, Mr. Adnan.
    • Ahmed Hasaan We have always managed to find some lame excuses for our wrong doings and still we have managed to do so, if someone makes fun of our parents how will we react or will we still continue to talk with that person.....

    • Imran Ali dude i am in it, i was thinking for something similar.
    • Imran Ali it got banned for sure.
    • Hassan Ahmed Syed I like the way you think man. Unfortunately our fellow citizens don't. They use to get emotional as you mentioned above. We should defend it not by boycotting but them preaching them perhaps !

May Allah guide us all !

Perhaps some thing to know how website get higher in google and other search engines is through more traffic, more clicks and as a result website's page ranking improves, this is exactly we are alll doing, telling every one to go on to the ...site and improving the page ranking, there are 100s of website containing not only false information about Islam, best thing we can do is do not promote them like this and they will be lost in web world, its like Rushdi wrote a stupid book in which he insulted every one including Jews and Christians and UK white women, imagine if every muslim person start to buy the book then who will get financial rewards, As Ahmed deedat said, last thing you can do is buy the book to read it, leave it to experts and they will deal with it. There are literally 100s of website giving false interpretation of Islam, more we protect them more we promote them, we should be promoting the right websites so that they come on top if any one search for Islamic topics.See More
    • Omer Hanif we should present the truth and should not miss any oppertunity to promote islam, as been asked by Allah in sura Aasar, "wata wa so bil Haqa" , we should worry about wiping these kind if stupid thoughts from peoples mind and hearts, -ive advertising wont help.

      Exodus 20:4-6

... “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.

At last bro Mohamed Nizmi Nawash touched the point..Spending time, money and wat so ever from logging in to logging out of face book - watever is been utilised are they useful to us?? i mean this in connection to our faith (Islam)..if tat d...oes happen no need of boycotting coz facebook serves as a better platform in shouting out ur thoughts..insted of inviting only the known person ,invite strangers(both muslims & non muslims) so that we can atleast share our views abt Islam..in this machine life u cant go and meet 7 people a day and ket them know abt Islam..rather if u really wish to be in facebook , start inviting strangers and give them the best of knowledge about our faith..

Jus step out to share knowledge , and it is Allah 's duty to give Hidaya to them..

Our authorities, says Muir, all agree in ascribing to the youth of Mohammad a modesty of deportment and purity of manners rare among the People of Mecca… Endowed with a refined mind and d...elicate taste, reserved and meditative, he lived much within himself, and the ponderings of his heart no doubt supplied occupation for leisure hours spent by others of a lower stamp in rude sports and profligacy. Hi Adnan: I am very impressed by your thoughtful message. I think that some introspection would be a positive step for everyone and would help improve dialogue on many "Islam vs. the West" issues that we face today.

I see that you are ...an IT guy by training, but I hope that you continue to write on more issues even beyond the internet and facebook because I think that your reasoning would speak to many and help those less eloquent than yourself to find some clarity. The reson for everyone to agree is that we are so imune to fb that we cant think life without fb now...secoundly for this we all have found d lame excuase for not to abandon fb..My question is this is a mere step that we can take by quitti...ng fb...cant we do that ......Everyone above have quotted many narrations by OUR BELOVED PROPHET (P.B.U.H) but none of use practice the sayings. Can anyone imagine if someone abused our parents will we stand in some forum to condemn and will be willing to have a dialogue

Dear Mr.Hassan , i agree with ur thought but i jus wanna say that opinion differs from person to person ..if i were in a situation where my parents are abused until they comedown i would fight and to an extent if i cum to know that they can...not be changed ill leave the forum..i can live without the so called facebook and if u see my recent ... See Moreactivities u might know y iam still in facebook.u no need to be a roman in rome unless u know who u are???
u and me knows wats happening and the reason for boycotting it..are yu sure that every muslim facebook users knows that..i don wanna be selfish and escape from Allah sayin the moment i heard i quit..i wanna ask myself wat am i gonna do for this nasty work..
i am not reasoning my activities..jus too share my opinion as this is a platform of sharing also..
and as far as i know from my experience a musilm can be (or he is a muslim ) if and only he practices otherwise he is not in the sight of Allah..
and for we muslims facebook is nothing nothing nthing not even a dust in front of Allah (SWT) and His Prophet SAW..

‎@Ahmed Hasaan: these are not our reasons for continuing to use fb because we are immune....we would boycott fb if it would stop all these activities but it wont, we would just close our eyes towards them....as opposed to that all those who... are boycotting fb are finding an easy way out of their responsibilities as a follower of Prophet SAW that are outlined above.
Besides all this why do we keep saying 'our' Prophet when he himself said that he came for all humanity. He is their prophet too, only we need to make them realise that!!!!

We are living in this world, where many other religions also exist. Most of them hate Muslims, our Prophets, and our Books.
If we will start searching then we will found lot of materials upon these issues on net, in libraries and so on.

I ...will take an example of Salman Rushdie. What he wrote in 1988, everybody knows. This material is available with almost all publishers in USA and west and on net too.
      And about Salman Rushdie, (Wikipedia):
The Times ranked Rushdie thirteenth on their list of "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945"
He was appointed a Knight Bachelor by Queen Elizabeth II for "services to literature" in June 2007.[2]
He holds the rank Commandeur in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France.

And there are many news papers and countries that awarded him such type of rewards.

If we found something like that in library anywhere, will we boycott the library? Boycott USA , France , UK , Internet, Times, International media and so on.

Dr. Professor Aamir Liaqat Hussain had also given imaginary example that if we live in such type of area where we found the bad business women, then we will leave that area.

Why it is necessary to give such type of hypothetical examples? Every Muslim must know that “None of us becomes a believer until Prophet Muhammad (SAW) dearer to us than our children, our parents and all mankind."

May Allah give us the knowledge to understanding the way of living with strength of Islam.
