In north america there's an intense legal battle going on over the rights to the original series, Harmony Gold being one of the main contenders. One or the other of the other two were the ones who bought temporary license to the show for adaptation into Robotech, or so i've read. Currently no one owns the explicit title to SDF Macross.

Yeah, I don't quite understand what's happening, but ADV has released the original Macross and Mospeada, and Southern Cross appears to be on the way.
