Vox Populi: Chuck (Season 1)
Chuck (Season 1)
I watch a lot of TV. I didn't used to, in fact I spent the first 19 years of my life watching nothing but the History Channel. But when I got to USC Film School, I basically decided that I needed to be able to speak intelligently about the big TV shows throughout history (Friends, The West Wing, M*A*S*H, etc). To that end, I started Netflixing TV shows and working my way through them.
Since then, I have watched 7 seasons of The West Wing, 10 seasons of Friends, 7 seasons of Buffy, 5 seasons of Angel, 5 seasons of LOST, 5 seasons of House, 6 seasons of Scrubs, 3 seasons of Supernatural, 3 seasons of Heroes, 2 seasons of Rome, 5 seasons of Boston Legal, and more single-season shows than I can possibly count. So I've watched a lot of TV. I tell you this because I want to be very clear about this next part:
Chuck is the single best TV show I have ever seen.
Not "one of the best," not "maybe the best." THE BEST. And by that I mean this: I enjoyed every single moment. Never before this show have I encountered a program in which there wasn't a single episode I didn't enjoy, a single character I didn't love. From the stars to the supporting roles to the guest stars to the extras, from the Big Bads to the monsters-of-the-week to the minor arcs, from the pilot to the finale, Chuck rocks.
Centered around the story of a Buy More (read: Best Buy) employee who accidentally gets the government's entire intelligence database uploaded into his head before it is destroyed, leaving him with the only copy, the show follows the adventures of Chuck and his handlers, Sarah Walker of the CIA and John Casey of the NSA, as they try to stop bad guys and kick ass. So, basically, take the hottest chick you can imagine, the biggest baddass you can imagine, and then (if you're anything like me) insert yourself as the star, and throw in a lot of guns and nefarious schemes, and that's Chuck. Yeah, it rocks pretty hard.
Filling out the cast is Morgan, Chuck's under-achieving best friend, Ellie, Chuck's incredibly sweet sister, Captain Awesome, Ellie's inhumanly perfect boyfriend, and a cast of minor characters that never cease to entertain. Season 1 focuses mainly on Chuck's attempts to get used to the world of international spies, and has less of an over-arching plotline than Season 1. That being said, its a good primer into the world of the series, and it leads perfectly into the second season.
I could go on and on. The music is beautiful and exciting, the action scenes are thrilling, the comedy is unendingly hilarious, etc. But rather than just tell you about it, why don't you check out the trailer below, and then go watch the series on Hulu or iTunes? Chuck has been having a bit of trouble lately, (more on that to come in the Season 2 review), so check it out now!
Rating: 5/5 Super-Spies
Perfectly balancing humor, action, and genuinely powerful emotion, this is the ultimate show for anyone who likes to geek out from time to time. And let's be honest, who among us doesn't love that?
