Ottawa Folk Festival: The Guthrie Family Rides Again. October 28, 2009 @ Dominion Chalmers United Church
The Guthrie Family Rides Again. October 28, 2009 @ Dominion Chalmers United Church
Folk Festival Fund Raiser Concert Featuring Arlo Guthrie and Family
The Ottawa Folk Festival along with Cisco Ottawa Bluesfest are pleased to present the Guthrie Family Rides Again 2009-2010 Tour. For one night only – October 28, 2009 – Arlo Guthrie will bring together four generations of Guthries for this extraordinary concert in Ottawa at Dominion Chalmers United Church. Arlo will be joined on stage by his son Abe, daughters Cathy, Annie and Sarah Lee Guthrie, son-in-law Johnny Irion, and several members of the youngest generation of the Guthrie Family.
"This is a very rare opportunity to experience the musical energy, the laughter and the family ties that have made the Guthrie Family such a powerhouse throughout the years. The spirit of Woody Guthrie is alive and well!" says Chris White, the Folk Festival's Artistic Director.
The tour, which runs from June 2009 to May 2010, will take the Guthrie Family across North America with only three Canadian stops. Hitting the road is nothing new for the Guthrie family, however, as for generations they have traveled the world making music for many years. Arlo and his wife Jackie raised their children on the road, inviting them to join him on stage frequently. The Guthries have realized that making music as a family has taught them how to listen to one another in many different ways… a valuable life lesson that has kept the family working and performing together.
The 2009 – 2010 tour officially introduces the fourth generation of Guthries to the stage in the form of Woody’s great-grandchildren! The entire family will be performing songs that they’ve written, learned together and come to love. Along with Arlo’s standards, the evening will include a selection of recently re-discovered Woody Guthrie lyrics put to music by friends and family. Part of the concert will feature Woody's voice from newly-found recordings from The Woody Guthrie Archives. The evening will include a tribute to another great American musical legacy, The Carter Family, whose songs and music have inspired and informed Woody and the family for years.
This is an event you don’t want to be left out in the cold for so get your tickets today to see what Vanity Fair calls “the first family of American folk.”
