Riverwalk Community Church: Sanity Scares The Heaven Out Of People

Sanity Scares The Heaven Out Of People

There's a great story in Lukechapter 8about a man Jesus healed. The man was demon possessed, he ran around naked, and lived in a cemetary. His life was extra creepy! At times he would be restrained only to break the chains and go back to his wild way of living. People were quiet scared of him. Then Jesus came and healed him. And you would think this would be a good thing for the people who lived near him. But notice what the happens...

"A crowd soon gathered around Jesus, and they saw the man who had been freed from the demons. He was sitting at Jesus' feet, fully clothed, and perfectly SANE, and THEY WERE ALL AFRAID." Luke 8:35

What? The man who lived homeless and naked is suddenly "perfectly sane" and the people were afraid? Yes, sanity scares people. When you start to make "sane" decisions people become afraid. For example...

Talk about how much you love your spouse and kids and get ready for strange looks.

Pass up a promotion at work that requires you to work more hours and prepare to be called crazy.

Give up eating "fast food" to eat healthier and you might be labeled a health nut.

Get up 30 minutes early to read the bible and pray for friends and family...you are seen as a fanatic.

Sanity scares the heaven out of people. When you do "perfectly sane" things people get fearful. And they do not keep their fears to themselves. Notice what happened when the fear overwhelmed the people who lived near the man who had been healed.

"All the people in the region...begged Jesus to go away and leave them alone, for a great wave of fear swept over them." Luke 8:37

Guess what Jesus did.

"So Jesus returned to the boat and LEFT..." Luke 8:37

WOW! How would you like to be the people of that region who will forever be known as "the people who begged Jesus to leave"? Fear is a powerful thing. And sanity scares the heaven out of people!
