4,000 Clean Energy Jobs

by Steven Chu on Friday, September 4, 2009 at 2:16pm ·

Earlier today, Vice President Biden and I announced the Department of Energy has finalized a $535 million loan guarantee for Solyndra, Inc., which manufactures innovative cylindrical solar photovoltaic panels that provide clean, renewable energy. The funding will finance construction of the first phase of the company's new manufacturing facility in Fremont, California. Solyndra estimates the new plant will initially create 3,000 construction jobs, and lead to as many as 1,000 jobs once the facility opens.

    • Karri Peterson It's not that I don't like clean jobs, it's just that I think there might be a better approach to it than a government loan.

    • Tony Rusi What about the new solar cell work at caltech with silicon nanowire 3d cells? This is the problem with government picking winners, instead of setting up a constest that requires some demonstration to win.

‎3000 "jobs" are the construction workers building the plant. The other 1000 will work in the plant when completed. How is that "4000 jobs?" The 1000 plant workers won't be working while the contruction is taking place. Then the 3000 co...nstruction workers will be fired and 1000 hired in the plant. At no time will "4000" be employed.

By that same logic, you can take a plant that employes 1000 people and fire them all on friday, hire them all back on Monday and say you "created 2000 jobs!"
