Laura Ferreira Studios: The Solitary Alchemist

The Solitary Alchemist
I finally saw this film today and I have to say that I am so proud to have been a part of it, even though I jumped on board last minute for the poster artwork. When I was shooting for it I chatted a bit with Barbie, and all I could think was "my God, this woman reminds me of myself". Watching the documentary only made that notion stronger.

I kept blabbering to my boyfriend over dinner later that it must have been fate that led me to create this artwork. I'm so glad I did it and that I met her, our lives are different, but the deep emotions and darkness that we use from within ourselves and our experiences to fuel our work....I was brought to tears many times and had to kick myself (dammit Laura you're going to dinner after, don't ruin your eyeliner!) because a lot of things hit home.

I can finally say that I have an inspiration living here in Trinidad, someone I can actually poke in the arm and not some foreign entity that I'll probably never meet. I am turned off by many artists who seem to have more ego than talent. Just a real human being with a genuine gift, not hiding behind a facade of glamour and socialite bullshit. Discovering her work was one of the best things that happened to me this year. I hope everyone in Trinidad and beyond can have the opportunity to see this film and her collection of work. I had to write this before I went to bed.
