Layer 5

The shell of the room is finished and we’re almost ready to display our wonderful decorative items. But where? Layer 5 is devoted to the non-upholstered furniture, or the side pieces that will add surfaces and storage areas to a room. Called occasional tables, these are the workhorses of the room. Without proper functional surfaces like coffee, end and side tables, a room simply doesn’t work.

Occasional pieces will also add additional texture, visual interest, and help anchor the room. Wood, iron, glass, stone, leather, are just a few options that come to mind. A combination of materials can give more dimension to the piece. I prefer a less contrived look as well. Please resist the temptation to select matching pieces from one collection. Blend, but NO MATCHY MATCHY!! Let’s get some character in this layer! Perhaps a stone topped accent table, or a small trunk that looks like you found it in Great-Grandma’s attic. A conversation piece….

When choosing these workhorses, keep the focus as much on function as on form. A coffee table with a drawer, tray or shelf can accommodate the junk that usually gets piled on the table.  There are lots of clever storage options available. Your seating should never be more than an arm’s length away from a reliable surface. If you have to get up from a sofa or chair to reach a lamp or your beverage of choice, that surface is too far away. Layer 5 is designed for functionality and the key is to ensure that the workhorses of the room serve the space effectively, yet look fabulous!
