Richard John Thompson: Tour Diary 4 - Final Day in Germany
Tour Diary 4 - Final Day in Germany
They say that “time flies when you’re having fun”. There was never a truer word spoken.
Today is our final day in Germany, and tonight our final show. It’s hard to believe that 15 days ago I arrived into Hamburg airport to meet our tour manager Dennis (one of the most knowledgeable people I know), Dave and Berenice (guitar tech, sound lady and all round good guys), Sandy (merchandise seller extraordinaire) and of course Midge.
Today I’m back at the Hamburg airport hotel preparing for our Lubeck show. What happened in between was a series of some of the best shows I’ve ever played (not necessarily in terms of size of crowd, but in terms of quality). Every crowd has been amazing. Quiet when you need them to be, rowdy when you just want to have fun, and all very kind.
If I had to pick a favourite show, it would be between two. Either Krefeld or Ludwigsburg. Both very different, but everything seemed perfect in these two shows.
Last night’s gig was the strangest of them all. We performed in a small room to a select audience on the third floor of a small castle in the middle of Bavaria (a place called Reidenburg). The show was good, but nothing compared to the view from the windows. It was probably the nicest I have seen in Germany, looking out across the valleys. It reminded me of the Lake District actually, but with blue skies and sun, instead of rain.
This morning we took a flight from Munich to Hamburg, while poor old Dennis drove the gear 8 hours through the night. A lot of Red Bull and pit stops later, he’s here safe and sound and ready for the last show.
I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about the tour. It’s been a blast, and I’ve met some fantastic people. I’ll hopefully be back in 2009.
Hope you’re all well,
Richard
