Riverwalk Community Church: Hope For Divorced People

Hope For Divorced People

Since the opening day of our church I have never received more emails than I have since we have talked about divorce. There are so many people today who have experienced divorce in multiple ways. Either their parents divorced, they have divorced, or they are considering divorce. For many of them their faith brings them comfort and condemnation at the same time.

Their questions reflect how complex the issue really is...

Is adultery the only permissible reason for divorce in the bible?

If I divorced my husband years ago, is it wrong for me to remarry?

Can I serve in ministry even though I am divorced?

I divorced my wife for selfish reasons...the marriage failed because of me...how can I reconnect with God and can I ever remarry again?

How do I explain to my kids that Mommy & Daddy are getting a divorce?

Powerful and necessary questions for many hurting people. I am going to attempt to answer many if not all of these questions through my blog. I am learning much for new writings of great authors on what the bible does and does not say regarding divorce. So, this will be me writing out of my own discoveries, not dusting off old papers from seminary and giving quick answers.

Do you have questions about divorce or remarriage. If so, comment on this blog or email gary@riverwalkchurch.net.

Let me end by saying, God's plan for divorced people is the same plan He has for every person.

God loves divorced people unconditionally. (John 3:16, Romans 5:8)

God forgives divorced people...if the divorce was their fault or not. (Romans 6:23)

God wants a relationship with divorced people. (Romans 10:9-10)

Divorced people are not second class citizens in the church. Divorced people are not selfish or dumb people. Marriage is hard. Most divorced people I meet are intelligent, giving, compassionate, Christian, humble people...who are hurting because of divorce and long to find solutions to issues of guilt and being a vibrant follower of Jesus. So, join the conversation and follow the blog for the next several weeks.
