I had the opportunity to fly Airtran this week on a trip to California out of Philadelphia. I typically fly USAirways because of how convenient it is out of Philadelphia, offering non-stop service to many destinations, both domestic and international. However, I decided to go with Airtran for this trip. The main decision maker for me was the inflight wifi service available on ALL Airtran planes. Aside from Virgin America, Airtran is the only other provider currently offering wifi fleet-wide.
I was pleasently surprised with the staff at Airtran, both in the airport and onboard the flight. Everyone was curteous, friendly, and went out of their way to assist us, especially since we had our 4 month old daugther with us.
Not only does Airtran offer low fares, but they still offer one of the lowest baggage fees, just $15 for the first checked bag. Also - they still provide complimentary in-flight beverages and snacks, along with affordable business class upgrades (we were able to take advantage of this upgrade on the last part of our return flight, from Atlanta to Philadelphia).
Oh - I almost forgot to mention. On our return flight from San Diego to Philadelphia, with a stop in Atlanta, the plane coming in was running about 60 minutes behind schedule. To expedite the boarding process, Airtran offered to check any additional bags that we wanted to our final destination at no additional charge. How great was this! Now we didn't have to lug around our heavy carry-on bags! I was a bit concerned that our gate-checked bags would reach Philadelphia - but to our surprise they were first off the belt in baggage claim.
