Mercury Questions and Answers

We've received many questions about the mercury we sell. Here we give some answers.

  1. Is mercury safe to take on a plane? You should check with the airlines on this one. Mercury does ship as a hazardous material so we’d say NO to taking it on a plane.
  2. Does mercury give off light?  Mercury, such as found in compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), does not produce visible light itself. When an electric current runs through the bulb it excites the mercury molecules causing them to emit UV light. This UV light, in turn, excites the tube’s phosphor coating, which then gives off a nice, visible glow. The miniscule amount of mercury in a CFL (about 4mg) is only there to help in the light producing reaction.
  3. Does mercury come in other colors? Elemental mercury is a silvery liquid. It does not come in any other color.
  4. Do you sell mercury powder? Mercury powder is a non=specific term. It probably refers to some salt of mercury (e.g. mercuric chloride or mercuric oxide, etc.) or other compound used in the manufacture of fluorescent lamps.
