New Geologist: VPP Survey from J. Bauer (ETSU)

VPP Survey from J. Bauer (ETSU)
Presenter Name: Jennifer Bauer

Presentation Date: 10/13/09

Presentation Location: East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN

Presentation Audience (ex: Undergraduate Geology Students, Graduate Engineering Geology Students, etc.): Undergraduate Geology Students

Total Attendees: 27

Presentation Coordinator (AEG would like to contact them to thank them for the opportunity: Arpita Nandi and Jennifer Bauer

What did you include in your presentation (ex: Question and Answer, Case Histories, “A Day in the Life of…”):
AEG SYPSC presentation and AEG membership
Presentation on NCGS landslide program and skills I acquired in school that I still use today.

What questions did the audience ask?
If the landslide maps were used for regulation.
Mostly focused on the mapping.

Later conversation included licensure discussion, which the students and professors were very interested in. The professors even discussed potentially requiring the GIT exam for graduation.

Several students were interested in becoming members, especially since the Carolinas Section was paying for the membership. I took back 6 filled out applications, and 8 others were interested. I passed out a sign in sheet with check boxes for those interested in membership and scholarship info to let me know.

What did you enjoy most from this experience?
The conversations with students one-on-one after the presentations were over. They were very excited to have us come in to tell them about career options and licensure. They are interested in a student chapter of AEG and are excited about becoming a part of the organization.

What suggestions would you give other professionals who would like to make a presentation?
Definitely mention licensure, even if it isn’t offered in the state where you are speaking.
Talk about classes you think would be important for them to take (hydrogeology, GIS, engineering soils, etc.) Classes they might not think they would need.

What additional material or support could AEG provide?
Now that we’ve gotten these students excited about AEG, we need to make sure that we offer meetings and services that are close enough for them to participate in. If we can stay in contact with them, I think they will form a student chapter, and help at the 2010 Annual Meeting.
