REACHSingapore: Companies encouraged to recognise & reward workers' sacrifices
Companies encouraged to recognise & reward workers' sacrifices
Singapore's Tripartite partners, comprising the labour movement, the
Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) and the Government have
issued a joint statement that would help to provide guidance for employers
to better manage long term manpower challenges and prepare for economic
recovery. The Tripartite Advisory on Managing Manpower Challenges for
Enhanced Competitiveness and Sustainability includes
i) recommendations for companies which have experienced recovery to review
cost-cutting measures which are still in place, in consultation with
workers and trade unions (for unionised companies);
ii) recommendations for companies to recognise employees for their support
and sacrifices made during the downturn;
iii) strategies for companies to enhance business competitiveness in the
long term by implementing flexible wage systems and enhancing productivity.
In a separate statement, Labour Chief Mr Lim Swee Say welcomed news that
some companies have decided to give a one-off payment, in recognition of
the sacrifices made by workers, while others are considering partial or
full restoration of the wage cut or freeze. He added that companies should
be socially responsible in the way they wrap up efforts to manage the
downturn as he believes that "it will further strengthen the trust between
the labour and management. The next time round, the workers would be even
more responsive."
With Singapore pulling out of recession and the economy on the mend, do you
agree that companies should reward their workers for the sacrifices made?
How else can companies better prepare for an economic recovery?
