Blogs.com: The Internet Won't Make You a Social Misfit
Good news for everyone reading this: the Internet will not turn you into a social hermit, this Pew Study just found. Use of the internet and, in particular, social networking sites like Facebook is actually "associated with more diverse social networks." While 6% of the adult online population is socially isolated, ReadWriteWeb writes, "this figure (the 6%) has not grown as access to technology has grown over the years--it has remained virtually unchanged since 1985. This points to the fact that perhaps those who are socially isolated individuals would be so anyway." Personal Democracy Forum points out that "the metric that Pew is using here is only the extent to which we have discussions with other people, rather than other kinds of social engagement." Graham Jones recommends ignoring the headlines that suggest that using the Internet too much will isolate you and disconnect you from the real world. "You need to engage in online social networking to enhance your real world social activity and to deepen those relationships."
