As Sonlight people, I know you like to read. And today, I'm here to share an article written by my mom. That's right: An article by Sarita Holzmann, President of Sonlight Curriculum! I've read it, and, well, I think it's worth reading and thinking about:

I love these kinds of articles because of how they encourage us to learn from history, not merely repeat it.


I also found Dana Hanley's post on socialization to be powerful. [NB: The post includes discussion of racial slurs, so if you don't want to read them, please skip it.] And if you're up for it, I think Uppercase Woman's blog post, which Dana links to, is also very interesting.


None of these articles/posts are light or happy, but I think they are important things to think about and consider. And I always welcome your thoughts as you read these articles as well, so please feel free to come back here and share them with me!

I have been frustrated by homeschoolers with the attitude that 'as long as we got out Bible done then I count it as a successful day'...yes I've actually heard that! How can we successfully teach others about Christ if we know nothing of the world they live in?
I'm thankful that my husband supports homeschooling, allows me to choose what to use and... See More keeps us accountable (he also helps out when needed) I'm thankful he agrees Sonlight is the best choice for our children.
My son is a little immature for his age but within our homeschool community he's never been picked on....in our cub scout group which is out of our parish school he has been teased before....I have noticed many times how kids that go to school are more apt to pick on and tease as opposed to homeschooled kids who play in groups with vast age differences and never tease.

So well-said. The fundamentalist view that women should be silent in the church and home has troubled me also. In the early years of homeschooling, my husband was not convinced. (Gal. 3:28) This summer I read Scot McKnight's book 'The Blue Parakeet', which deals extensively with the issue of women in the church/Body of Christ, and what the Bible really has to say about it. Eye-opening...

Well---my husband is way too busy to take over ahd silence me---and he knows better! We are a team, each with our own duties. In fact, in our small town my children have no homeschool friends besides their one friend each from our own church----the rest are either LDS or fundamentalist and therefore we just don't fit in. We are too outspoken I ... See Moreguess. Also---we use SL and we don't censor the books like I guess a 'good' Christian would.

A little off topic Luke, but in your mom's article there is a picture of a group of women from San Francisco that states it is 1891----but the dresses and hairstyles look much more like the 1920's----is it a misprint of date?

Love this article! Will definitely be sharing it with friends. However, Katie is right, the dating in that one picture is way off. It's either very late 20's or 30's. Immediately to the left of that one is Lucy Webb Hayes' portrait. That is how women dressed in 1891. No woman or girl could even be forced to wear short, cropped hair or a short hemline in 1891.

Hmm... I'll look into the picture more. I honestly didn't even pay attention, I was too busy reading <smile>.

Okay: Update on the picture issue: The pictures were chosen by one of the people involved with the magazine that published the article to add interest... so authenticity was not a high priority in some of the image selections. So... you're probably right: They are from a different time <smile>.

Fair enough?
