The Sauda Voice: Judge Faces Angry Public for Refusing to Marry Interracial Couple
Is anyone else tired of the, "What about the children?" excuse given by those against interracial marriage? Except for a small, confused few (and yes, they do exist), most mixed children grow up to be intelligent, well-adjusted adults.
NEW ORLEANS - Last week the nation was abuzz with news that a Louisiana justice of the peace refused to marry an interracial couple. Why did he do so, especially in 2-0-0-9!!?? Out of concern for the couple's future children.
Keith Bardwell, Republican Justice of the Peace for Tangipahoa Parish, denied a marriage license to Beth Humphrey, 30, a white woman, and Terence McKay, 32, a black man, earlier this month. Upon inquiring about the license, Justice Bardwell's wife informed Ms. Hardwell that she should seek a license from another justice of the peace in the parish who married interracial couples.
The couple is considering filing a discrimination suit against Justice Bardwell and several prominent lawmakers and civil rights groups have demanded his resignation. To date, Justice Bardwell has refused to step down.
