This installment of song tab of independent record label recording artists focuses on Saddle Creek Records, which was founded by Conor & Justin Oberst in 1993. Located in the musical mecca of – um, Omaha, Nebraska – the label was, according to Wikipedia, named after a major street that runs through that city’s downtown.

Although I jokingly poke fun at Saddle Creek Records for being based in Omaha, the fact of the matter is that since the early 1990s Omaha has been a hub of sorts for many great songwriters and bands, most of whom share a slight country-tinged sound, appropriately known as “The Omaha Sound.” Practitioners of this style, including Conor Oberst and Tim Kasher, were among the first artists signed by Saddle Creek. However, as time passed and the label grew in popularity, many bands outside of Omaha were welcomed into the fold, and today Saddle Creek Records is home to a diverse roster of artists that includes Rilo Kiley, Georgie James, Tokyo Police Club, and many others.
