National President blogs: Why Are Our Children Violent Against Each Other?

Why is it that week after week we see news stories highlighting acts of violence by young people against young people? Not too long ago we were saddened by the unnecessary death of a young man in Chicago who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now the story is about a gang rape of a young lady attending her school Homecoming Dance. When is enough, enough?

When I was a student I had one simple household rule to live by, “get in trouble at school and get the punishment two fold when you get home”. Today, when a student breaks the rules parents often say, “I know my child did something wrong, but . . .”

My friends, it’s time to throw “but” out the door!

because our politicians don't care. THere is always something in it for them only. When our children are in school, we trust that the teachers will make that our children are safe, but that isn't true anymore. TOo much bullying and violence going around in our school. People stand up for your children, please.

A very small percentage of bullying behavior is witnessed by adults. We have to reach the children. They need to stand up for each other. Too many tragic things have happened where groups of children just stood by, cell phones in hand, and they didn't even make a call.

I am a single mother and an administrator for a non-profit summer arts program for children. This year we saw the worst instances of bullying and meanness amongst the children in the entire 25 years of the program.

We are having to seriously consider that some children may not be able to attend because they were so disruptive that the classes ... See Morecould not be held properly or that they were a danger to others and they were completely remorseless of their actions. I cannot figure out what is going on but one common denominator for all the cases was that the parents of the trouble makers were usually AWOL.

Perhaps we as adults need to stop turning out backs on the "bad kids" and take time to get to know them, mentor them, learn about why they are the way they are! We need to view these kids as kids who are seeking attention - let's give it to them instead of dismissing them. It's when we turn our backs on them that they act out in violence! If their parents arent around then other caring adults need to STEP UP and help.
