KISS IN PORTLAND: GREAT FAN EXPERIENCE

KISS at the Rose Garden in Portland: Where do I even start?

This review is going to be totally biased because this was not my usual concert experience. First of all, I bought side stage (read "expensive") tickets because I was taking my 10 year old son and wanted him to have his mind blown. So our seats were unreal.

Second, my co-guitar player in my Portland band is a long-time friend of the Thayer family (KISS-man Tommy Thayer is from Portland). So long story short, I run into Pat at will call, and he is picking up a pass for a meet and greet. I knew about this and of course had asked if he could find out if he could bring me and my kid, and of course he couldn't. No shock there - but I thought it never hurts to ask.

But lo and behold he gets his envelope and there are five passes in it. He wanted to make sure he didn't mistakenly have someone else's passes so he went in alone and my son and I got settled. Pat then texted me that we could have two of the extra passes. Sweet!

So he comes and gets us and we stroll across the main floor backstage just in time to see the fab four in full makeup and gear walk by to go to the meet and greet. I high five Gene Simmons as he walks by. My life is complete.

We are ushered into a room where almost everyone is a friend/family member of Thayer. On the other side of a black curtain separating the room is the meet and greet, and there is a line of folks posing with KISS for a photographer.

So we went back around to where we started and eventually Tommy came into the room to greet his friends and family. Got his photo with my son, got an autograph on my Sonic Boom CD. We had just enough time to hit the bathroom, grab a couple of waters and get back to our seats.

Oh yeah, so then the show started. The band I saw tonight was the tightest version of KISS I have ever seen. Of course I was blown away by the lights, bombs, smoke, spitting blood, revolving drum set, flying bass player etc.

But they were really tight. Eric Singer has a double kick set and he used it to its fullest potential. Maybe it was because he was in his home town, but Thayer blew the doors off of his leads. I swear I didn't miss Ace once, and that is about as blasphemous as I get. Didn't hurt that we were so close to Thayer that I got one of his thrown guitar picks, which I promptly gave to my son. The night just kept getting better, huh?

Vocal harmonies were tight. Paul Stanley did more rocking than I have ever seen. Gene was great. His blood spitting bit has evolved a bit and is even more monster-movie derived, which is a good thing. He did Calling Dr. Love, which is one of my faves from childhood. In fact, the setlist was mostly stuff from Alive!, with personal faves being Hotter Than Hell and 100,000 Years. They did two new songs - both were awesome live, two 80s era songs (Lick It Up and I Love It Loud.)

One more note on Thayer. He kept mugging to our side because many of his family/friends were seated in my section. Right before Rock and Roll al Nite, I saw him go up to Eric Singer and get a drumstick, which he promptly slid into one of his hip-high boots and walked towards our side. Under cover of the raining down confetti, he leaned over the stage and handed the stick to a guy who came over to our section and gave it to a kid who must have been about 3 or 4. High class, that Tommy Thayer.

So to sum up, this is not the classic KISS lineup, and they don't sound like the classic KISS lineup. It's something else and damn it, it is good. I bought this ticket thinking, I will take my kid and then I'll be done with KISS. But if they came back tomorrow, I'd be there.

And, if I am able to do half the stuff Paul Stanley did onstage when I am pushing 60, I will be a very lucky guy. That dude is immortal.

its true you can not outdo the originals but i saw the new lineup oct 2 in tdot and i have to say thayer and singer do all they can and more to emulate 70's style KISS concert.lets be honest aswell, singer is obviouysly a better drummer n...owadays, peter is almost 70 and recooperating from breast cancer. As for ace he is doing his own thing, which he wouldnt change. He gets to play his KISS songs and other KISS songs they he has always wanted and the way he heard them. So thats be happy for all the members current and past because rite now they are doing their own thing.See More

    • Mathew Carfi It may not be KLASSIC KISS, but it is a far better show.... I loved seeing the original line-up - but that got stale - Peter was losing it (Ace was still fine, but can't make the guy play!!!).... it was awesome when Eric came back... Yeah, the make-up thing is kinda lame - put 2 new characters in maybe, but the music is absolutely better, the show is better, and KISS is still KISS....

    • Mark Wardle I read with amazement about Eric and Tommy. We woud all love to have Peter and Ace in the band. It did not work out. Be thankful they are still touring. I would love to see them in concert. But they will never come to South Africa. To see them live would cost me about $2000. You can see them whenever you want. Instead of ridiculing. Enjoy the band while you can. It is not going to last forever.....

I am with Dean, Terri, Jim and Matthew. Peter was great, but his skills have eroded. Ace is great again, but doesn't want to play with Gene and Paul. The rub IS the makeup. Eric is a great drummer but he's not the Catman. Personally, a...fter seeing BnB 2X, I think Tommy was mediocre. He may be better now, but I don't think we will ever know because he copies Ace or plays in Ace's style. However, for what KISS IS DOING NOW, it's fine. Gene told me "buy what ya like and leave what ya don't." I don't like others in the original makeup, so I left SB in Walmarts despite it being a decent cd. (Also wouldn't buy because of Classics disc.)See More

    • Tom Ewok Healy BTW:from most accounts, Ace DID want to be there for Psycho Circus and had brought several songs to the table. He was turned down, likely bacause as a now hired gun rather than a member, Gene and Paul did not really want to share the writing credits, ie, the money.

Tom Healy - You are on it, man. Stuart...You need to learn your Kisstory, bro. Peter also brought tunes to the table for Psycho Circus. They were thrown aside. The only song Peter played drums on is Into the Void, because Ace insisted on it.... That's the only song on the album that features all 4 original Kiss members playing together. It shows? Yeah - It shows that Gene & Paul manipulated the entire project & Ace & Peter had little to do with it. There's a great interview with Peter Criss & Eddie Trunk on Peter's website that explains a lot of things. You (all) should check it out. Btw - Ace's new album, Anomaly, is kick ass. See More

    • Da Nugster Joel Nuguid i have no problem with thayer and singer in the band, what pisses me off is the lack of respect the original line up gets from some of the johnny come lately fans. ace and peter may have been fuckups but the fact that gene and paul insist on putting their faces and moves for tommy and eric to copy just validates the fact that its the originals that the fans want.

Before the show in Peoria, Illinois on the Animalize tour Eric Carr had promised to give me a drumstick after his solo. After his solo he walked to the front of the stage and HANDED me a drumstick. When I saw the kid in the movie DETROIT RO...CK CITY get the drumstick at the end it took me back to that moment. Eric Carr was a great guy and treated me ... Read Morelike he was my fan. Ironically, I saw Eric Singer with Gilby Clarke and others (band named Don't Touch Grandpa) at Pinky's in Vegas while KISS was on the Reunion Tour. After the show he threw me a drumstick. The only one he gave out, somewhat reluctantly. He did not hang around to chat, unfortunatly. It felt like maybe he had some animosity about his situation and the KISS Reunion. I could only imagine how he must have been feeling at the time. I give him credit for being a trooper and tossing me that drumstick considering what was going on at the time. It's nice to see Tommy continuing on with that spirit. The Eric Carr drumstick was stolen from me in 1986. Eric Singer's drumstick was donated to charity, a rock auction, along with other KISS items.

    • Aaron Dryden Great review! This was my first KISS show ever, I always somewhat wrote them off as an old band, past their prime, but after sitting in similar seats as you at this show, I am amazed. The best show I have EVER seen, so much energy, I've seen Metallica, Ozzy, Mudvayne, Buckcherry, sooo many bands, but not one compares to a show Kiss puts on
