Alfred E. Neuman is the gap-toothed, goofy-grinned icon of MAD magazine, the humor and satire comics magazine founded by William M. Gaines in 1952. The origins of the image are a mystery, but the name and the face were first paired in 1955, in issue number 29. In 1956 artist Norman Mingo painted the standard for the now-familiar face that has, in various guises, graced the cover of MAD ever since, with the accompanying motto, "What -- Me Worry?"

I heard that his image was taken from (or influenced by) either an old caricature of a jew or an illustration to some sort of hormone/nutrition disorder in a medical book.

I always thought he looked like a younger version of my uncle, hehe.

WELL.

In Ten Cent Plague, a fairly new book by David Hajdu, there's a quote by Kurtzman about Alfred E. Neuman's image. On pg. 198 it reads, "It was a face from an old high school Biology book, used as an example of a person who lacked iodine."

I stopped buying Mad when they started accepting advertisements. It seemed to defeat their original purpose of not selling out.
