Greater Hartford Church of Christ: Rebuilding Together New Britain 2009
Rebuilding Together is a program the Greater Hartford Church of Christ has partnered with for many years. This program fixes up the yards and homes of the elderly, widowed and/or sick people of New Britain who are not able to do the work themselves.
On a rainy and cold Saturday, October 24, many disciples from our congregation met at 9 AM at the church building to sign forms, get a cup of coffee, form teams and head out into our community to work. Prior to departure, Ryan instructed and Lincoln Gifford prayed.
Four different homes in New Britain would be served that day and another team was left behind to make lunches, which would later be delivered to every volunteer.
One home was full of items the resident had wanted to throw away for years but just hadn’t found the time or courage to clean out. Another home needed mainly painting on the inside. A third home had many projects ongoing – gutters being mended, painting upstairs and yard work on the back hill including digging out steps kept hidden away for years. By the way, three brave sisters – Jennifer Cody, Tracy Stevens and Tiffany Gil - were getting soaked with a smile while tackling this project.
The fourth home needed the special touch of Paco Hernandez on the inside fixing wallpaper problems, replacing a light switch and painting. Outside, Cornell Allison and Aaron Perry were cleaning the house down and preparing for a power wash. However, Cornell noted, “God decided to start the power wash a little early,” as a brief period came of torrential rain. True to form, they worked through the rainstorm and it soon calmed down a bit.
