Stuart Tan: When Life Deals You A Cruel Hand

When Life Deals You A Cruel Hand

After observing what’s been happening in the current economic crisis, it’s ironic what is happening. For most people, they thought the worst could happen during the downs. In reality, after the central banks rallied to “save” banks, many others were probably burnt as well, depending on what instrument they were trading.

What happens if you are on either side of the fence and still got burnt? I suppose life really isn’t fair, but there are a few practical lessons for us here.

First, when things go wrong, admit it, face the facts and ask yourself: what corrective measures do you want to take? Sometimes, it’s not so clear cut as who is to blame because it could be an entire culture, a series of decisions or possibly a biased view that prevents you from really identifying the problems. In this case, it makes perfect sense for you to simply forget what’s or who is to blame, and focus on the facts.

Second, what is your vision for the future? I recently talked about vision and mission to a group of budding entrepreneurs. It’s so obvious that in order to create a decent business, one needs to focus on the ground level basics. Everything in business, it is said, begins with the entrepreneurial dream.

Third, how are you cleaning the house? Remember, we sometimes hold our baggage as we journey through the years. How much garbage are you still carrying that you should have left at the dumpster? We can’t make different decisions if we are still contaminated by old lenses.

Looking forward, the world has much to learn. I can’t say we all have the collective wisdom to achieve everything we want, but everything serves a purpose. We have to make things happen. And if ‘bad’ things happen, we should be happy that nature is weeding out the things (and people) that don’t work. Keep planting your seeds and things will be much different for you.
