Yushu Earthquake UPDATE
Here is an update as of last night:
Some of ROKPA’s doctors from Canada, Italy and Switzerland are preparing to fly out to Yushu to help in whatever way they can. They will need to bring their own tents, food and anything else as there is no water, so far no electricity (may be there will be some solar cells installed today), no food.
Dead people are still being pulled out from the rabble. Death toll is now over 760 with 11’000 injured. All hospitals collapsed as did 90% of the houses. Some people are committing suicide as they are so despaired over the terrible devastation and unimaginable loss.
Three of our ROKPA children were injured, only one of them severely.
ROKPA has been building our orphanage for 250 children since 1993. This was our first school in Tibet (China). Except for one, all other buildings on the compound have collapsed or are severely damaged. The children were having breakfast in the dining hall – within the only house still standing when the disaster happened. They were incredibly lucky. But now they need a new home, they need immediate help! The damaged buildings are being carefully taken down in order to save furniture and building materials for later.
The children are being sent out of town for now. We are looking for other schools to take them in for at least a year. ROKPA wants to rebuild the school – now for 500 orphans as there will be so many more of them in this area!
We URGENTLY need your help as we now need homes for the 250 children already in our care plus hundreds more. We need major funds for the re-building of our orphanage in Yushu as well as for their immediate and later upkeep!
As thousands are in the streets in temperatures below zero help slowly trickles in. So many are injured and need to be taken to hospitals in Xining and Chengdu – 12 or more hours away.
Please think of what you can do, whom to mobilize, which agencies in your countries to appeal to.
Please go to our website: www.rokpa.ch and click on “English” under the Logo for an appeal you can use and account numbers or donate to ROKPA in your own country. We will update regularly so please keep on visiting us and tell your friends to do so too.
Thank you so much for your kind concern.
With my best wishes for you – in great sadness –
Vice President ROKPA INTERNATIONAL
