Fletcher Congratulates Canada’s Newest Senator
(Winnipeg) – The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Member of Parliament for Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia and Minister of State (Democratic Reform) congratulates Salma Ataullahjan on her appointment to the Senate of Canada.
“Ms. Ataullahjan’s accomplishments over the last 31 years make her an inspiration to all Canadians,” said Fletcher. “I am confident her experience will enrich debate in the Senate.”
Today, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the appointment of Ms. Ataullahjan to the Senate where she will represent the province of Ontario. Ms. Ataullahjan is a community leader and successful professional.
She has agreed to support the Government of Canada’s Senate reform agenda which includes legislation to limit the terms of Senators and encourages provinces to hold Senate elections.
“Our government will continue with our efforts for a more accountable, modern and elected Senate,” said Fletcher. “I look forward to working with Ms. Ataullahjan as we move forward with our Senate reform agenda.”
