2010 Alberta Summer Games come to a close

Peace Region... After seven successful days of competition and camaraderie, the 2010 Alberta Summer Games wrapped up in the Towns of Peace River and Grimshaw and surrounding area on Sunday, July 25. Nearly 2,500 participants from across Alberta competed in 15 different sports.

Three awards were handed out at the closing ceremonies:
Alberta Cup: Awarded to Zone 5 (St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Leduc, Hinton, Athabasca) for achievingthe most medal points.

Minister’s Cup: The region showing the greatest improvement from one Alberta Games to the next was Zone 2 (Airdrie, Okotoks, Drumheller, Banff and High River).

Spirit of Sport Award: The zone which best demonstrated the spirit of fair play, sportsmanship, team spirit and cooperation on and off the field of play was Zone 8 (Grande Prairie, Slave Lake, Peace River and High Level).

Approximately 2,000 volunteers helped to feed, transport and host the athletes. The successful event was the result of two years of preparation and planning by local organizers and various community partners and supporters.

The first Alberta Summer Games were held in Calgary in 1974 and are now held every two years. The 2012 Alberta Summer Games will take place in Lethbridge in July. The Alberta Winter Games will be held in Parkland County, Stony Plain & Spruce Grove in February 2012.

The Alberta Games is a program of the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation made possible with the assistance of dozens of corporate sponsors, host municipalities, provincial sport associations and the Government of Alberta.
