Newman Qualifies 5th in Pocono; Stewart Grabs Pole
LONG POND, Pa. (July 30, 2010) -- Ryan Newman will start fifth in Sunday's Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 Sprint Cup race.
In Friday's time trials at Pocono Raceway, Newman's No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet covered the 2.5-mile triangular track in 52.961 seconds at 169.936 miles per hour.
"It was a good lap, but not a perfect lap," stated Newman, a former Pocono winner. "The U.S. Army Chevrolet was fast all day, but we didn't get everything out of the car in qualifying. I was a little tight in Turn 1 but felt like I was really good in the tunnel turn (Turn 2) and pretty good down in Turn 3. But I gave up most of my time in Turn 1. Having a good starting spot is a nice way to start the weekend.”
The pole winner was Newman's Stewart-Haas Racing teammate, Tony Stewart, who recorded a time and speed of 52.511 at 171.393. Positions two through four were claimed by Juan Pablo Montoya (second), Denny Hamlin (third) and Jeff Gordon (fourth).
Sunday's race will be televised on ESPN, beginning with a 60-minute prerace show at noon ET.
