MP James Bezan Announced Funding for the St. Laurent Métis Music Festival
On Saturday, September 4th, Mr. James Bezan, Member of Parliament for Selkirk-Interlake, attended the opening ceremonies for the St. Laurent Métis Music Festival celebrating their local arts and heritage.
“Our Government is proud to support the St. Laurent Métis Music Festival,” said Minister Moore. “By partnering with communities to support activities that celebrate our shared history and our rich cultural diversity, we are fulfilling our commitment to strengthen our communities and support arts, culture and heritage.”
“I would like to take this opportunity to applaud the organizers of this festival, for not only volunteering their time to make this event a success but for encouraging future generations to become aware of their rich and diverse heritage through stories and celebration,” said Bezan. “I am proud that our Government has taken steps to strengthen communities by supporting festivals such as these that celebrates who we are.”
The St. Laurent Métis Music Festival Planning Committee received funding of $14,700.00. The festival took place on September 4th and 5th. It presented musicians, singers, steppers, and dancers. The 2010 festival was the third edition of the festival, with previous editions in 2007 and 2009.
The Government of Canada created the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program in September 2007. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in local activities that present arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage. This program will benefit many community events and celebrations throughout Canada this year.
