Mandy Martin Named Assistant Pilot in Charge of Spirit of Innovation

Mandy Martin’s life has recently become a bit more complicated.  Last week, Martin was elevated to the role of Assistant Pilot in Charge of the Spirit of Innovation.  Just weeks prior to that, Martin found out she was pregnant (her and husband, Nick, are expecting a boy in late October).

In her new professional capacity, Martin will take on additional leadership responsibilities and in her new personal capacity, she will be taking on infinite responsibilities.

"I feel so honored to be a part of the Goodyear Airships,” said Martin. “Not only am I privileged enough to get to fly the blimp but I also am fortunate enough to be part of a highly skilled team.  I am looking forward to my expanded role as APIC.”

Martin spent 8 years in the U.S. Air Force and has flown airships for five years – the last two with Goodyear.   She received her Goodyear wings on March 20, 2011 and is one of two active female Goodyear blimp pilots (Taylor Laverty is training to become the third in California).

In addition to flying hundreds of passengers during her Goodyear tenure, Martin has piloted the Spirit of Innovation over high-profile sporting events like the Daytona 500 and NBA Playoffs.

“One day we are flying over a tire store to recognize a customer and the next we are covering a baseball game,” said Martin.  “No two days are alike."

Martin’s status as a Goodyear blimp pilot puts her in select company.  There are fewer blimp pilots in the world than U.S. astronauts. Considering Martin’s pregnancy, there just might be another blimp pilot on the way.
