Lance Johnson: Budget Shortfall - enewsletter #3

Budget Shortfall - enewsletter #3
Dear Voter,

As we take pause today to mark this momentous occasion and open a new page in our country's history, we are reminded that we are entering an "era of responsibility".

With both state and local officials facing an uphill battle over budget concerns, it may be all too easy for officials to pull the trigger on a tax increase. The Kansas Legislature has a momentous task of making up a $944 million in their upcoming session. Already predictions are that this will affect our local school district with a $22 cut per student this year and a $66 cut per pupil next year.

The local county assessor is also predicting a flattening if not a decrease in local property values which will proportionally decrease the money coming into the city coffers. Current and future leadership at the city will be facing a real challenge this year during budget sessions.

Maintaining current levels of service by the City of Lawrence is my top priority, while improving others and holding the line on your property taxes. Michael Eglinski, auditor for the City of Lawrence is already getting a jump on this by asking you for your thoughts on how the City of Lawrence can create efficiency's in its own operations.

As I hope to be a part of the solution this spring, I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas as we move toward resolving an inevitable budget shortfall. I appreciate your support as we head toward the April election. Please, if you get a moment, visit my website at www.LanceJohnsonForLawrence.com. We can do this together.
Best Regards,
